wazaa, Actually Tyson was really a great mid range fighter. He would just stay out of range come in **** away and out. He would not stay a long time in the pocket which is what inside fighting is about. I don't describe Tyson as an inside fighter. Hollyfield was a better inside fighter, when he got inside he stayed there.

Think about it, as bad as people in here think Hatton's chin was he would of been in serious danger of being knocked out had he let Tszyu fight from long range, Hatton was safer inside against Tszyu because Tszyu cant fight inside and his power is on the end of his punches.

Id say you have to have a good chin, and be and prepared to take shots and have good head movement.

Dynamite Kid , Good point. Since this is wazaas thread and is almost certainly a question about Khan. In the Prescott match Khan was KOd in mid range by the hook , had he got really close to Prescott he would have been OK because Prescott has no leverage close up. His lack of infighting skills really showed as when he closed the distance throwing a a badly advised feeble left upper cut lead instead of moving forward to close the distance and press an attack he retreated and put himself in the death zone and was nailed by the hook. With good inside technique my guess is he could have got inside Prescott been fairly safe and done some damage. Against Precott a taller man he needed a good inside game ,he was not beating up on his favourite, short ass opponents where his hit and hop it style is the way to go.

Just like to add that fighting inside is no where near as dangerous as fighting in the pocket is. You are much more likely to get nailed fighting in the pocket than you are fighting inside imo, particularly if your fighting a puncher.

I saw people try to fight Tito from mid range and whilst they would have sporadic success they would generally get caught/destroyed eventually.

A fight i can recall was Arguello vs Kobayashi, now from watching the first 1/2min of that fight i could see Kobayashi was getting to get knocked out, simply because of the distance he was operating from.

                  100% agree.

I think what got him nailed in the first place was that he tried to adopt that Cuban style of fighting in the pocket catching and throwing from mid range , only because he is either not a very intelligent fighter (Boxing brain) or because he lacks the awareness, he reached to the body with a hook, which as we all know is a BIG no no, and he got nailed.

obviously a good chin is very important but...
On the inside, you can be like Chavez sr and count on your chin and power to dismantle your opponent, or you can use your forearms and body to feel your opponent, feel what hes going to do next and react effectively, eiter by slipping the punch and/or counter. That way your chin should be less involved.
Also, sometimes is not about your punch resistance, but how can you roll with the punches and protect your chin in the process.
