You need to have a good chin to be a fighter, period. Or great defense.

depends on how you do it.

Sometimes if you have very good defense that it good.

Also when you are an in-fighter there and fight in a phone booth fight then it very hard to generate power from the punch at a short distance.

I cant agree with people saying hatton didnt have a good chin. People who say this must be new boxing fans. Nobody hurt hatton for a decade he never went down. Hes one of the toughest boxers in recent history. His defense, or lack of it let him down in the end not his chin. He moved up in weight to fight floyd and that ko was due to heavy punch accumulation which he was not used to. Anybody would have got ko'd with the punch pacquiao landed, ANYBODY!!!

Khan can train as much as he wants he will never be able to take shots hatton could. That's why he'll never dominate the division like hatton did, NEVER.

On the other hand if you are fighting world class opposition then you are going to get hit sooner or later. A bad chin is going to be a big disadvantage no matter what your style is.
Agree, Hatton is a prime example.

          Agree again.

Also i guess it depends on who your fighting, i mean you would be better served staying close to someone like Kessler because he himself has no inside game, not to mention he is taller which means he would have to rotate his body more inside to turn his punches over because of how much longer his arms are, then there is the fact that his power is generally on the end of his punches where he can get his extension, therefore you might be safer inside against someone like Kessler, that is if you know how to fight inside properly.

Tszyu is another strictly long range fighter with no inside game whom Hatton was able to take advantage of and stay safe by staying his chest.

Power comes from the legs and the right angle. Some fighters are more effective with long distance punches (cause they snap them on th end), others are compact punchers

Ricky Hatton's chin isn't granite. He's tough, but he can get wobbled. Same with Corrales. So it definitely helps, but you don't need it.

I honestly dont know whether Hatton had a good chin because he did such a good job of making himself safe before unloading on the opponent, he rarely got nailed significantly before moving into world class, Hatton never stayed infront of you when he got inside he would step off the line and attack from angles but he would also tie up your arms inside so he could **** you.

Good inside fighting is a product of good technique and instinctive wareness. A fighter should have a good inside game to complete and know what to do when the fight gets to close quarters. Without it he will always be vulnerable to pressure fighters and good counter punchers that know what they are doing. A good chin helps as you are going to get hit more fighting at close range simply because you are more likely to be in punching distance. If you have a poor chin you can still be a good infighter but it would not be wise to take the fight there but resort to it when your opponent takes you there. Without a good inside game and with a poor chin you are asking for trouble. A good pressure fighter will sense weakness close the distance and pour it on ,if you don't have the game to make him suffer and pay at close range he is going to keep on coming with the odds favoring him every time. A poor chin is no excuse for not having sound infighting abilities. In fact if you have a poor chin and good long range skills a solid inside game is a must and insurance if you are ever to make the most of your deficiencies.

Good post. I also like to add that sometimes having a good inside game can be a detriment to you because when you are so adept at fighting there you can languish inside too much when your game plan should be to keep it at long range.
