because the welterweight division was on fire at the time with dangerous opponents in their prime.. Mosley, Cotto, Margacheato and Paul williams.. Incendentally, since mayweather came back Mosley got even older, Cotto became damaged after margacheato, margacheato was exposed as a fraud and paul williams moved up(and as we seen with sergio martinez, he isn't dangerous when he goes down in weight anymore)

Mayweather still hasn't fought a real welterweight.

If Margarito's not doing PPV's then, he wouldn't do them around the time Floyd retired. Unless the whole, "People only watch Floyd to lose" thing is 100% fact.
If he's willing to fight a lightweight in Marquez--why wasn't he willing to fight other top fighters in his own weight back then? Look at Pacquiao the cheater---he fought Hatton considered the lineal champ at 140 when we all know the Brit ****** ass, and that there were other better opposition at 140.

Marquez wasn't a draw until the Pacquiao fights and like Margarito after his questionable demolition of Cotto, but he says he fights the best....but he really doesn't

Before he retired why didnt he accept the offer from guys Like Margarito to fight him? or why didnt he fight Mosely,Cotto or even Pacqiuao back then? i even heard paul williams called floyd out and that floyd didnt want to fight...So all of a sudden when he comes back into the sport as a comeback fight He fights a Past it Juan Manuel Marquez to Move Up 2 Weight divisons? i mean yeah thats a good fight but why go for him? why not fight someone who was in your weight division originally? And now that hes gonna fight mosely which i think is good for floyds reputation what about the other fighters? is he gonna man up and fight Pacqiuao,Cotto, possibly even marg if hes let back in?
He fought JMM just to shake off ring rust, at 31 years of age, a near 2 year layoff could take effect. And, I think he was just having a break really. In the Hatton 24/7 he did seem to have a lot of problems with his hands and elbows, so maybe he just wanted to rest for a while? I just hope he starts fighting the fights he should have done a while ago soon. And Mosley is a sure start towards it, imo.

It is either at the start of his Hatton or DLH fight that Lampley says Floyd told them he was looking to take 2 years off to rest, but after the fight he said he was actually retiring. It was clearly a plan of his to take a year or so off to heal his body and see where his mind was at.

I remember Paul wanting to fight Mayweather, I believe it was after he beat Margarito, Floyd was asked about the possibility of fighting Paul and his reply was "I have never heard of Paul Williams". He tries to belittle possible opponents that have a chance of beating him to justify not fighting in his own mind.

I may be wrong but I think he retired because there were dangerous WW out there who could possibly beat him.

we was probably avoiding a stacked WW division. He could have not stayed p4p king without fighting an undefeated cotto, margs, pwill or mosley. He retired saying he had nothing to prove, he retired as the #1 WW in the world yet he had done nothing to prove it, he didn't fight any of the top 5 WW's at the time, Manny has been at WW for like a year and has fought two top 5 WW's.
