Yeah hit and not get hit sort of thing.

I do find it exciting, and soemtimes very skillful, but I do feel that we miss out on the power punchers that this sport needs.

It used to be that if a fight was very tough and close going into the last round you told your guy WORK! You NEED this round or u lose!! I won several big national amateur fights like that....and have seen some thrilling finishes but now? Not sure if u know this or not but each corner is made aware of the score between rounds so if you are heading into the last round and are up by a score of 15-4?? You literally just tell your guy "Don't get hit, that's all"...and he moves around, limits the action, etc...15-4 in computer scoring is almost IMPOSSIBLE to overcome under those roles by a guy who decides he's not going to let his opponent catch up...as the man said, "The thrill is gone, baby..."

I often hear the Ohio state fair mentioned as a great amatuer tournament and place where many top pro's competed as am's. Do they still have a successful tournament and are there other state fairs thatv do this, as it is the only one I ever hear of?

Yeah I do notice the last round can be about running.

I do feel it encourages accuracy more, and power shots, but you're right on the last round.

Man, the Ohio State Fair at one time was the greatest amateur boxing tournament in THE WORLD...(I won it in 1987 at 165 open, defeating future heavyweight contender Melvin Foster in the finals)...sometimes there would be 500 or 600 boxers entered...I actually compliled a list of some of the future gold medalists, contenders and world champs who fought there...I'll find it...I know that in 1973 Buster Douglas boxed in it at something like 85 pounds!!! The OSF is still there every August but the turn out it not close to what it was...stil a great event...the AURA of the OSF was something very special...In the 90's I used to go there with my as a coach...I saw Paul Spadafora, Dante Craig, Ricardo Williams, Rock Allen, Devin Vargas, Jason Litzau and many others box there...for this era the Ringside Nationals held in Kansas ever year is the top tournament...tons of boxers but to be fair, the aura is not that of Ohio back in the day...

the big problem is that the comp scoring is very biased against most boxing styles and it favors EASTERN BLOC countries and Cuba in a BIG way...the average American kid is at a disadvantage with the computer...

Cubans are big guys for the weight and hardly any turn pro. They have always been good

The eastern fighters have to be accurate and hit with enough force. Same with the Americans.

I think that the US fighters are capable of it too. They can box ofcourse, but power in punches are also a good thing.

                      Definitely bro.

Although how they would do for 12 rounds, I don't know, but certainly they had the skills.
