bear in mind I started the thread before Marquez pulled out. It is a long post but gives supporting evidence.
You are right about the effect of protecting a fighter on the fighter's development. If the fighter knows he is being protected as clearly Khan does the subconscious kicks in and the potential dangers don't frighten and motivate the boxer to learn his craft. The result is a soft domesticated fighter, protection works very much like a zoo kept animal ,if you took a zoo lion and put it in the wild it is not going to fare well. As the fighter becomes softer the need for protecting increases and you end up getting into a vicious circle. We are there already and have been with Khan for some time. They will keep feeding him canned fights but will eventually come unstuck when one of the soft touch opponents throws up a nasty surprise beats him. It won't happen against a good fighter because he will never be put in the ring with one. The pattern gets clearer as the charade continues.
I would say you need to cut the kid some slack. He's had only 23 fights. Most fighters are not world champs at this stage. Khan's career seems pretty nornmal to me. If he was in need of protection he would have stayed with Frank Warren rather than broadening his horizons and wanting to become successful in America.

    • not having enough power to be effective 21 pounds north of your fighting weight against the best fighter in the world doesnt hurt marquez' status. khan fans would like us to believe Prescott fight didnt actually happen. Schaffer is hooking up the milking machine to Amir, at least until he realizes hes not hatton or hamed. 140 pounders that ko khan, Bradley,Holt,Torres,Alexander,Campbell,Diaz,Maidan a,Hatton
      135 pounders that ko khan,
      Marquez,Katsidis,Valero
Until Khan beats any of the above he isnt to be considered an A level fighter, he is a prospect, and a damaged one at that. If some piece of trash lawyer says Khan wants to fight Jesus Christ but Christ turned the fight down, that automaticly raises Khan status to higher than Christ, doesnt it?

thanx v.much for the link, john. i can't access it on my work's pc but will have a peruse when i get home.
you're very cynical but with good reason. how many british prospects over the years have been built up, amassed an impressive statistical record against renowned 'opponents' , claiming they 'deserve' a title shot, purely on the basis of having remained undefeated over a lengthy period, mainly due to numerous defenses or challenges for ever vacant 'penta continental' baubles etc??
call me olde fashioned but the criteria for a 'world' title shot should always be on the old time basis of having actually defeated someone in the world top ten. i know this strays off the whole khan subject but you've just opened a huge can of worms!
i personally find khan to be a joy to watch - the athleticism and blurring handspeed usually make for fast paced bouts. i'm in agreement though - sink or swim, eitherway, it'll be entertaining.

Sumurai, I have followed Khan's career in England and cut him plenty of slack in the past. I knew something was wrong when he avoided the traditinal route to the title by not fighting and avoiding British and European titles. He then got the easiest run at the world title I have ever seen . I have got to the point where I can almost predict the next move. When I saw he wanted to back off Maidana I could clearly see what was going on. I wont cut him any slack any more especially as Maidana has been coerced into a ****ty deal where he can't fight Khan for 3 fights . My hunch is that by selling himself short (he is to blame here also) he will lose in those 3 fights and lose his best chance ever of becoming a world champion. It is one thing protecting a fighter another potentially ruining another fighter's career. Maidana is now running the gauntlet,I hope he makes it through but clearly Khan's protection is at his expense. When I see things like that clearly, excuses and cutting slack don't cut it any more.

          • HELLYEAH! If Khan fights Katsidis at 140, I'll take back everything bad I said about him.

            • very valid points, apunchnotseen and samurai.... amir rellocating to america doesn't necessarily suggest he'll be any less protected though. of course, the kid is only 23 but the bottom line is he is a 'world' champion and traditionally should've learnt his trade before challenging for a world belt. if he can't accommodate the real challenges due his age and lack of big time experience, he shouldn't have ventured into world title waters.

              • Judah Khan would be the most entertaining fight of the year.

                • I didn't want to see this fight because I want to see Khan fight a natural, younger 140lbs fighter. I feel like Khan was trying to get away with some bull****. Junior welterweight is stacked with good young talent. Either fight Valero from 135 or a true 140.

fair point, although if the jmm fight were to unexpectedly come off, i still think it would be a brave (or astute) move on amir's part, or his backers.
should we expect a replica of khan - barrera (the great mexican warrior, not completely shot but still way past his best) , or would we see the marquez who beat casamayor and diaz, due to the fight taking place not too far north of his preferred weight class?? who knows, hence the intrigue.
