Hamed was liked very much when he was fighting. Barrera is loved because he is a legend who had amazing fights with Morales.
Also no other big names ever come to the UK to fight, so it was a special occasion.
I believe it does have something to do with the 'racial climate' in the uk after 9/11 and the london bombings. ******s have been demonised in the press and are disliked by a much larger percentage of brits than before 9/11 when Hamed was at his peak.It has **** all to do with his religion you ******, Naseem was ****** and he had armies of English fans that followed him around the world. Amir Khan has no fans here cos we have our eyes open to the **** cherry picking that has gone on from day 1!!! Fighting shot, small men does not win you fans or prove yourself championship worthy.
Its a fact that white and Asian communities in northern England have experienced an uprising in racism.
I think that is part of the dislike of Khan.
After 19 fights there wasnt much difference between Khan and Hamed. Except that Khan recieved loads of attention for his olympic silver meddle, and had loads of pressure on him to fight the best fighters out there.
Hamed had no real pressure like that.
Arent all upcoming young fighters cherry picked opponents? He was almost KO'd by that unknown fighter so he did have to be careful who he fought. I think the trouble was he was over hyped too early, and given too much attention by the press. As a teenager he is going to sound a bit ****y, but everyone over reacted to every thing he said.At the time Khan was disliked because of the blatant cherry picking and total avoidance of the vibrant British Lightweight matchups that where availible to him in the forms of veteran Thraxton and up and comer Murray, both of which where being talked up as the people he needed to fight after teh Earl victory, instead he fought St Clair (coming off 2 losses at SFW), Gomez (Another SFW) and got his ass handed to him by an unknown slugger who's turned out to be nothing more than a journeyman.
Add into the fact that he was already on PPV while fighting Super Featherweights and Schoolteachers and there are plenty of legit reason outside race for people to prefer a genuine Legend over him.
People cant boo him for not fighting anyone who is dangerous, but also boo him for getting KO'd by Prescott.
In some ways he would have been more popular and better off if he never went to the olympics.
Thats another factor. The ide hard Hatton fans.
Its a mixture of both, Barrera was giving a standing ovation but i see NO reason why Khan should have been booed, But the fight happened in Manchester and am sure some of the fans dont really like Khan because some of them are strictly Hatton supporters....Its complicated in a way.
Love Barrera and Hatton and Khan apparently didnt like each other.Comment

I think it was because Barrera is quite a popular figure who will be forever remembered over here for the schooling he put on Hamed. There's also that Hatton connection.
Khan was recieving a lot of backlash for the Prescott loss too; people felt as though they'd been decieved by the Warren and Sky Sports hype machine again.Comment

It's true up and comers do find "suitable" opponents, but after that one punch knock out by Prescott, it's hard to see a fighter leave something like that in the past, because you can't train to make your chin better. Either you have it or you don't.Comment

English fans like Barrera, he is a legend. People boo'd Khan because of the point you made at the start. Everyone knew Team Khan had cherry picked Barrera because of his name, and because he's was too small and way past his prime.Didn't watch it till now because I knew that they CHERRY PICKED Barrera because of his name, and because he's was too small and way past his prime.
But my first impression is that Barrera got a standing ovation and Khan got BOO'd, badly....
I was puzzled, because I know Khan is from the UK himself and Barrera is Mexican.... Can someone from the UK explain this for me? Some of my English buddies tell me that people are very prejudice against ******s/Middle Easterners/Indians over there.
How's Amirs popularity in the UK? Do people perceive him well? (and I'm refering to the English population)Comment

Khan has quite a few haters and Barrera has some fans. Not many but boxing people know of him.
ATM there is quite abit of anti islam sort of hate.
That added with the fact that Brits don't like someone young talking big and wanting to fight big names.Comment

I was at the fight and was abit dissapointed Khan got booed. I was supporting Khan, but gave Barrera a great reception as hes a living legend whos been is some great warsa nd i was happy id het teh chance to see him live.
I think alot of people dont like Khan as they say hes too ****y. I dont see that to be honest, but everyone has there own opinions.Comment
