  • Hey Burner, who was buried in Grant's Tomb?

    • Being athletic doesn't give you technique.

Roy had a GREAT left hook. A Great right hand.

That is technique, that is skills, that is talent.

That is something you work on in the gym every single day from the time you are ten years old.

Being able to throw a perfectly well placed left hook to the body, is absolute talent.
Being able to throw 3-4 consecutive left hooks is athletic ability.

Slipping two punches and coming back with a counterpunch, is TALENT, is TIMING, is KNOWLEDGE of not only when to move but how to move.

Sure athletic ability helps you to move as fast, but speed and reflexes mean nothing if you don't KNOW when to do it.

John Scully has an entire thread dedicated to the talent that Roy had... maybe you should pop in their and whole heartedly tell him he doesn't know what he is talking about.

The fact that bernard is still doing what Bernard is doing at 45, is something 98% of the fighters couldn't do. It isn't somehow a discredit to Roys skills because he wasn't successful in his career POST 35.

      • athleticism IS an ability. roy jones was EXTREMELY talented, that's why he was literally unstoppable at his prime. his combos and agility were unique on the sport at his time, but you say that he has no talent?

if you want an example of someone who isn't talented, take paul williams. apart from his size and stamina, he's nothing but a punching bag with no foot coordination nor agility

i can't believe you said that roy wasn't talented, especially when your favorite fighter wouldn't last half a round against him in his prime

          Took you long enough, reed.

Roy would be disappointed in you.

Roy Jones got by on pure reflexes, strength, and athleticsm.

He was just bigger faster and stronger then everyone..he never used talent....and by the time he got old and easy to hit...he didnt have a fundemental background to keep him off the mat.

I look at him like Michael Vick is in the NFL.........fast, exciting, big arm but no accuracy and awareness about what he does.

Look at Mayweather Jr............like Peyton Manning, efficient, smart, accurate, moderate arm, rarely makes mistakes, fundementally sound, and has top notch intelligence and awareness.

I believe thats the difference between TALENT and being ATHLETIC.

Heres an NBA example for those not familiar with football:

Look at one Vince Carter...high flying, dunk on you, crazy wild dunks, crazy hops, a good exciting young player who couldnt soot a basic jumper, didnt play defense and was a bad passer.

Now look at Kobe Bryant.........high flying, dunk on you, crazy wild dunks, a good exciting young player who has an accurate jumpe and 3 point shot, very clutch, is the best on ball defender in the NBA and the all around best player and a guy who gets his teamates involved.

            Thats the difference.

Im not a Roy Jones hater.........I was a fan..but he weas not talented...he was just extremely athletic.....he culdve played in the NBA or NFL if he applied himself.
The Vince Carter comparison is horrible. Carter has a great jumper and his passing abilities are very underrated.

              • I think Roys more of a case of 90% athlethicism and 10% Technical Skills.

You can teach and learn skills.
                You cant teach Athlethicism.

You cant say he has no talent because Athlethicism is talent. You can say however has has limited skills. The thing that made Roy Roy and the things that he used when hes was at his best was not his skills but his freakish speed and power. Yes he had a great hook, but it was so great because you didnt see it coming and could throw it from his waist faster than most fighters could with thier hands up. You dont teach that, thats a gift you can only be born with.

The fact that Roy lacks pure boxing skill is obvious at this stage of his career. His hand speed, reflexs and head and neck movement are not what they used to be. He dosent have the same pop in his punches. And now hes become a mediocre fighter.

Now look at someone like Bhop, whos even older and at no stage of his career was half as athlethic as Roy. Unlike Roy he relys on 90% skills and 10% athlethicism. That is the only reason he is still fighting, Skills dont fade as fast as your athlethicism does.

If Roy wouldve had the Skills Bhop has, he proably wouldve been the GOAT.
