So the other night on the “GET UR FACTS STRAIGHT” talk show with HORUS we discussed in depth possible opponents for Miguel Cotto in June. I have given this some thought and presented an idea on having Cotto fight Yuri Foreman @ 154lbs for the WBA World light middleweight title in Madison Square Garden. Personally I think it would be a good move. Foreman got some exposure fighting on the undercard at “FIREPOWER” They are both TOP RANK promoted fighters so I don’t think making the fight would be too difficult. Foreman himself being a Brooklyn NY home based fighter fighting Cotto on the eve of the PR parade would definitely sell in the garden. The plus side for Cotto is he gets back in the ring with a name fighter, he gets a shot at another belt and for 154lb title holder Foreman only has 8 KO’s in 28 fights. So he is not the most heavy handed of opponents. This to me is exactly what Cotto needs right now. I honestly don’t want to see him in there against a no name at 147l. I think at least for now Cotto is done at 147. I can see him making a run at 154 or at least having the 2 fights he talked about in 2010. The one scenario that plays out in my mind is Cotto fighting Foreman in June and if he wins taking the WBA belt along with him. I can see Arum giving Chavez Jr his title shot against Cotto in late 2010. Call me crazy but I think this could be the way things lay out.
Some might disagree with me about this but with the way things have took a turn of events I don’t see a bigger money fight for Cotto at 147 in 2010 right now. The way things look right now the winner of the Berto vs Mosely fight could get the winner of the Pacquiao vs Mayweather fight. I could see Cotto getting the loser of the Berto Mosley fight but if it were my choice I would not want to put him back in there with one of the wolves just yet. No knock on Foreman but I don’t rank him up there with the likes of Mosley and Berto skill wise nor does he have the punching power of either of those men. If you look back on Cotto run at 147 you will see he has not had too many easy fights. The champion has fought nothing but top contenders and other past or present champions. With eh exception of Michael Jennings. To me Bob Arum owes it to Miguel to give him a big money fight with less risk. His path to stardom has not come easily. To the people out there who say Cotto is done….I will say this I strongly disagree with that statement. I have read in some of the papers over from PR that he and his uncle had the falling out due to his lack of discipline. While he may not be Ricky Hatton packing on the extra pounds during or in between fights he has grown to earn the reputation of a man who likes to party some. This was singled out as one of the main reasons for many of the arguments between Cotto and his uncle.
I have in the past praised Cotto in some of my threads and defended him on the forum. To me I think he has contributed to the sport a great deal over the past few years and gave us many exciting moments and a lot to talk about. With that being said 2010 would be an exciting year and a year where he could once again regain his confidence and earn himself another title in a third weight class. All while making a nice hefty pay check. We have seen threads and news articles where Chavez Jr has stated he is ready to make his title run in 2010. The Mexican fighter has been living off a name built up by the legendary fighter and his father Chavez Sr. He has a record of 41-0 with 30 KO’s. Respectively and although I might get some slack for it I will say it is a padded 41-0 with names like Rowland, Vanda, Cuello and LeHouller as his past 4 opponents. He has only scored one TKO in his last four fights and in his most recent fight made it look a lot harder than it needed to be. I give him the fact he was fighting at 160 rather than his usual 154 weight class. That being said he was given the opportunity to shine fighting on the FIRE PWER card and to me he blew it. As Money is known for saying if it don’t make dollars then it doesn’t make sense. To me Cotto could take on someone in the 147lb division and try to make another run at a title. Maybe get himself a rematch with Mosley if he losses to Berto. He might even be able to get the winner of that fight in 2010 especially if it is Berto. I don’t see him getting a fight with Floyd or a rematch with Pacquiao. To me to have him have two more fights and not go ut with a title and a money fight is meaningless and he might as well retire now if that si the case. As GG said on the call Wednesday night sometimes we have to save these fighters from themselves. Cotto is a blood and guts warrior and this makes sense. For Chavez Jr he will get his chance at a title and to prove himself against a real opponent. Cotto will get a chance to redeem himself and the big money fight he deserves. To me this is one scenario that makes dollars and perfect sense…..Lefty
