Roy Jones - " I didn't know why the ref stopped it"

Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. was upset by the Australian Danny Green, the 40-year-old boxer was stopped in the first round after the ref called the fight when Jones received a barrage of blows immediately after being dropped from a right hand. According to Jones however the fight was stopped prematurely as the majority of Green's final onslaught was blocked.

"You know I went in there, I was feeling him out keeping at distance with the jab but then I got lazy with my back near the corner and didn't defend myself properly. I made a silly mistake and got caught it's as simple as that, props to Danny Green for doing what he had to he saw the opportunity and took advantage of it. I was still hurt from the knockdown so I was looking to recover and just get my senses back. Most of his shots weren't getting through my guard so I didn't know why the ref stopped it. If I had known the referee was going to jump in and stop it, I would have tried to fight back or get out of there."

Whether or not Jones decides to step back in the ring is unclear but the Pensacola native revealed no intentions of winding down his legendary career, citing a potential rematch with Bernard Hopkins as one of the main reasons.

"This was just a temporary setback, I've been in this position many times before. A true fighter wouldn't just get up and quit, I still want the rematch with Bernard [Hopkins]. I know he wants it, I want it, the fans want it. There's no reason for it to not happen."

Seems like Roy still wants that fight with Hopkins, personally I would still like to see it. Roy beats Danny Green 9/10 times anyway.

Roy is a pro fighter he knows the drill. You dont fire back within 30 seconds then naturally the ref assumes one thing.

No way can a Bhop and Jones fight happen now, whats the point? I'm sure Jones has watched Jackson vs McCallum as well, if you are not throwing back any punches for a while then the ref will stop the fight.

but would the public demand still be high for a Jones-Hopkins rematch? especially after losing like this?

this is almost as bad as Hatton saying he over trained vs Pacquiao, but at least Ricky got laid out, and lasted to the end of the second round

he probabley was thinking of when tarver was wailing on him for half an hour

just in this situation he was after getting knocked down and most refs do tend to stop it if you get knocked down only to get up and have a guard up
