Is the real lineal championship vacant at 168? If you say yes then yes you don't have to beat the #1 rank guy to take over the #1 spot. Not if you think that Kessler was the real lineal champion then yes Ward is the man. But, if you believe Kessler was the lineal champ you would be wrong.

The lineal title has nothing to do with it. Ward destroys the consensus best Super Middleweight in the world, Bute beats a guy generally to considered to be somewhere between #4 - #6. Are you honestly telling me Bute's win was more significant than Wards?

But this is the point. Kessler didnt' have to rematch him. Kessler didn't gas. Kessler beat him for every second of every round. Bute can not claim the same.

Does that make him better than Bute? Perhaps not. Regardless, in divisional rankings, you don't rank based upon what could happen, but what did happen.

What did happen is this....

Kessler beat Andrade better than Bute did. Overall, perhaps not. But, it also didn't take him two tries.

Kessler didn't get knocked down in his fight with the biggest and only significant fighter on Bute's resume.

Kessler had faced the better opposition and Ward beat him. Ward also got a title, and TWO, not one, named fighter on his ledger, with less fights.

Ward might lose to Bute. But this isn't p4p rankings. This is based upon the work you've done, not the work you might be able to do.

Ward > Bute (in terms of 168 rankings.)

Yes.

Kessler is ranked higher than Bute AND Andrade.

Even if you take out Miranda, factor this in.

Kessler had the better resume than Andrade and Bute, combined. And Ward beat the guy who beat the guy who almost KO'd Bute. And he did it with less experience and fights.

It's just not realistic to assume that somehow Bute ranks higher then the guy who can claim all this.

What I am telling is that whoever has the better resume at 168 is the consensus the #1 guy. Was Ward win over kessler better than Bute win over Andrade? Probably so but was that win bigger cuz Ward opposition before Kessler was very low. Bute is 3-0 against top 10 fighters. Ward is 1-0. Are you honestly telling me that Ward has a better resume at 168 than Bute has?
