He lost to Jones in 1993 so Hopkins has been undefeated for 12 years. Yu can hardly find a top fighter now that stays unbeaten for 12 months. The fact that De La Hoya and Trinidad were welters moving up and are the best opponents Hopkins has faced in his reign does hurt his career and standing among the best middlweights ever. One cannot even compare the careers of Hopkins and Hagler, Hagler by far faced better and tougher competition. Duran is on just about every expert's list of the best fighters EVER to step into a ring and Hearns became a fringe champion as high as cruiserweight. Duran and Hearns are many levels above De La Hoya and Trinidad. Trinidad can get his stature up with a few more big wins against quality opponents and Hopkins can give his stature a slight bump up if he beats Jermain Taylor. When sizing both lists up, Floyd Mayweather has fought and beaten better competition then Hopkins. Floyd is young and beat two pound for pound fighters in Castillo and Corrales while Hopkins only beat one in Trinidad. Should Floyd's career keep going the way it is going and he keeps "winning" over top guys, he could really make a mark on the sport. The minute Hopkins leaves the sport or loses, Mayweather will be the top pound for pound fighter in the world on every list.

        hmm

Hopkins started his career at 175 and moved down twice. A former light heavyweight beat up a former lightweight and a former welterweight and we're supposed to give him top p4p?
Hopkins was never a lightheavy. He came in for the first fight of his career at 177 lbs, out of shape and never fought there again. One fight, that was it.

However, I can understand someone's argument that Floyd should be p4p number 1. I consider them tied and if Hopkins beats Taylor, that puts him ahead of Floyd in my opinion. Floyd can always change that by beating someone around his weight like Tszyu, Harris, Hatton or Cotto.

ill never like hopkins & even if i set aside the fact he
          beat my favourite fighter, tito.

the guy has been bullying smaller fighters for 12yrs.
since he lost to jones. after rematching tito (for the fans)
surely the next biggest fight out there for him is a rematch
          with lightheavyweight latecomer glengoffe johnson.

imagine the acclaim hed get if he stepped up 2 weights &
beat the jones, woods & tarver conqueror johnson.

that seals his legacy. another win over tito wont mean anything.
screw calzaghe at super middle..go for the guy whos hot.

and id stake my life that johnson would relish a chance to
avenge a loss he sees as the first time he was outclassed

since hopkins fought tito trinidad hes fought nobody who
tested him or looked close (i know tito didnt test him).
i havent seen jermaine taylor but from what i hear hes a
big middleweight & well equiped to maybe make the
          taylor-hopkins fight a competitive one.

or a more genuine middleweight fight anyways.

i dont really like mayweather either but his record is
FAR SUPERIOR to hopkins. time for him to step up IMO.

"Competitive fight? Uhhh...it is funny that people call that competitive yet have the nerve to say Jones wasn't one of the best fighters ever. Cause that fight was NOT competitive."

You can't be serious. Jones won clearly, but Hopkins was in the fight. It was Clearly 8 rounds to 4, and if you'd care to name me another fighter that won 4 rounds against a prime Jones Jr, I'm all ears. I have the utmost respect for Roy, but Hopkins put up a good fight and there's no shame in losing to someone that good earlier in his career.

The fact is, if you're going to cut down Hopkins, or try to say he isn't a top pound for pound fighter, you have to:

              A) Say that fighters (like Hagler) who stay at one weight class shouldn't qualify for that distinction

              B) Its the fault of a fighter if there isn't stellar opposition in their wieght class during their career (IE Larry Holmes, Roy Jones at Lt Heavy)

Neither of those are fair or true.

Again, Hopkins has dominated the middleweight division for nearly 12 years (unheard of by today's standard), has beaten everyone put infront of him since losing to Jones, is the only man to hold KO victories over future Hall of Famers Oscar Delahoya and Felix Trinidad, and at 40 years old is the only guy who holds the top 4 titles in his division.

You can disagree with his pound for pound position (and be in the minority) but trying to write off his career and accomplishments is silly.

who cares what belts he has when hes fighting the postman,
the milkman & that sloppy mojaloppy joppy i dont rate
jones jrs win over john ruiz & i dont rate hopkins wins
over allen, hakkar, joppy , delahoya or even eastman.

all mismatches where the bookies favourite won easily.

hes the master of suppressing a 12rd fight where he wins
but is incredibly boring even when he attempts to showboat.

after the smoke had cleared over delahoya-hopkins who cared?

                what did it prove...???

fair enough the depth of talent was weak in his division.
so why didnt the guy whos been boling down to middleweight
                step up.

beating ok middleweights is better than beating ok supermiddleweights ??? wtf is that about.

i just cant understand why he took the fights he did &
turned down or outpriced himself from the bigger fights.

if his defining fight was against tito the guy needs help.

                peace..s******

Hopkins is top pound for pound because nobody can beat him and there isn't another champ who can say that for sure.
