Is Bernard Hopkins overrated?

no you got me on carl "the truth" lol...i meant prince charles williams...nunn would have been a credible name title or not...nunn certainly would have been a more credible opponent than bo james...

So...Bernard Hopkins...an unknown, middleweight contender on the verge of a title shot, should've moved up to face a SMW who had no title himself...for what reason? You keep bringing up guys like Bo James...dude, Hopkins was just a middleweight contender when Nunn had any sort of buzz at 168. WTF is wrong with you?

that is why i said "more importantly" in regards to how people rate him in this era, that is why in my first post (which was completely ignored) i said "had he come along 88-95"

i know he wasn't really on the scene early 90's, i really am asking how people rate him so high given the depth around 160 just a few years before and if Bernards fans really think he would have been at the top of the pile competeing with the guys listed.

The obvious answer in my opinion is no, in my earlier post i said he'd have been lucky to even hold a title. Yet some claim he's an All-time great Middleweight (ludicrous), reality is that had he come along a few years earlier he'd be a second thought when remembering his own era, forget about all-time.

It's irrelevant. He was the middleweight champ, set the record for title defenses, unified the belts and beat pretty much every contender along the way.

You know, I'm not a Hopkins fan but I find myself defending him quite a bit on these boards from guys who seem to be either clueless or lack any perspective at all. Yeah, maybe if he came along in 1988 things might've been different. Maybe not. Doesn't take away what he did when he did come.

go look at the landscape of 160/68 after he lost to jones and tell me he couldn't have fought a whole host of solid name fighters that were his size....not just nunn..

Why wasn't he unknown after the Jones loss? You act like Jones was a superstar or something when he fought Hopkins. He wasn't! And Bernard was 100x less than that.

And after he lost to Jones why would anyone entertain him? "Yeah, let me take a fight with this unknown middleweight contender even though I'm a division above and have better opponents available."

He deserves alot of credit for what he did at MW, he beat everyone he could as a champion and Tito though moved up was a champion at MW and won his title in dominant fashion......how he is rated so high currently at LHW after a loss to a SMW moving up and a win over a MW at a catchweight........I just don't know?

ok so now first the excuse is everybody avoided him at 160...at the same time you are saying he absolutely could not move from 160 to 168 after he lost to jones, even though we all know he's a natural lightheavy...

bull-friggin'-****. Hopkins was without a doubt THE most avoided middleweight of his time. King had control over seemingly every other middleweight and refused to allow his best (Joppy and Holmes among others) anywhere near Hopkins until he was able to get paper on him.

ok IMDAZED here is the first excuse right here....hopkins is THE most avoided middleweight of his time....so why was a move to 168 out of the question.....at 168 you had...

i know the difference between logic and excuse...the only thing hopkins fans come up with is the latter...

meanwhile, the poll still has hopkins overrated by a mile...lol
