    Xenophobia against English fighters?

Am I picking on something that isn't there, or is there a slighy xenophobic attitude in America to English fighters?

Don't get me wrong, I was in the US last month - I had a great time. But when you see an English guy boxing there seems to be a real sensation of people willing them to fail, in a way that they don't other "foreigners". Mind you, Lennox was hard to like.

exactly, I could give a **** about where a guy is from, if you can fight you can fight. Joe Calzaghe is a guy that I defend all the time, I think he is an amazing fighter, however it gets tougher and tougher to defend him as each year passes because he inability to land a meaningful fight.

I actually posted this before I read the 6-7th pages of "Is Danny Williams a bum?"

I was thinking more of general audiences, though - I must say, this forum does seem more discerning than other boxing forums, people here actually want to talk about boxing and do have knowledge of their subject. Trash talk can be funny... to a point. In another forum I won't mention, or talk about, there's way too much of it.

It is usually British heavyweights that take the abuse usually. Apart from Lennox lewis they lacked heart in big fights. Frank Bruno lacked heart and went out holding Mike Tyson like a scared *****. He disgraced his country by holding and rabbit punching. Herbie Hide give in when Rid**** Bowe hit him once and kept trying to get the fight stopped by bouncing off the canvas. Joe Bugner also didn`t have the balls to stand and fight with Ali or Frazier and lasted the distance but his cowardly way of fighting blew it for him in the eyes of America. The only British heavy who was mentally tough was Lennox lewis to an extentand henry Cooper. Cooper kept bleeding but never quit. Danny Willims may have beaten Tyson but his past losses were pityful, he`d freeze mentally and give up before the opening bell. Keep this in mind for the Klitscko fight!

Right now, guys like Ricky Hatton and Joel Calzaghe get flak for not leaving their country to fight. I don't think it's xenophobic to think that someone who is a world-class athlete should prove it against others. And when the best tend to fight in the US (many of them immigrating), it's easy to dismiss someone unwilling to do the same as a local hero.

Props to Danny Williams for coming over to fight. Now if we can just get those other guys over here to fight Tszyu and Lacy...

I think Neils has the right idea here. Its not that people are agaist English fighters in general, its just that lets face it, you want big fights and respect you have to go to America and fight the best. If you stay holed up in your own country (be it England, Cambodia, wherever) you not only wont achieve glory, you will attract scorn. I believe most of the negative attitudes come from English fighters who for whatever reason dont step up to the big time.

But I agree with the comment that I dont care where your from, if you can fight you can fight. Just be able to prove it
