Paul is in an odd position following that shellacking. A lot of people are saying Netflix is now trying to insert itself into boxing. It’s not. They’re in it to make money or bring massive attention by hosting only the uber high profile fights. They’re not in the boxing business, they are more in the Jake Paul business mainly. The only card they hosted that DIDN’T involve Jake or his promotional company (like Taylor/Serrano 3) was Canelo/Crawford.
It’s going to be very difficult for Jake to move up the cruiserweight rankings “normally” because that would mean having to get Netflix (or some other distributor) to tentpole a fight of his against a #15 or #9 ranked fighter (who I’m sure don’t have a profile). And because of that, he’s going to have to take a massive pay cut or essentially make an absurd 90/10 purse splits with his opponents…and that’s IF Netflix (or whichever distributor) greenlights it. It’s odd. He’s built his profile so big taking on all these novelty fights…while having the capital to have world class sparring, trainers, and facilities…but now going forward if he DOES intend to chase a world title legitimately, he’s going to have to fight the fighters that no one can name without first looking at the rankings, and seeing if anybody is going to bankroll it.
It’s just too many hurdles to overcome unless he just plans to keep going the novelty route:
1. Find a top ranked opponent and hope he has an interesting enough backstory/record to promote to the higher-ups.
2. Find the willingness to go through another training camp with lifers especially after all that punishment he took last night.
3. Be willing to receive a massive pay cut compared to his Mike Tyson/Chavez/Joshua earnings.
It’s an odd position he’s put himself in. I don’t think he’s going for a world title. He’s got gumption, you have to give him that. But man, he was just SO wound up and tight in the ring and moving around that much he was just done. That was like when McGregor got to round 7 and you could tell from the body language he didn’t have any energy to tie up/hold and he was basically keeling over by that time.
