HBO and Showtime feel like utopias because the production values seemed better, maybe people look back fondly on where they were in their life, people who they were with (families and loved ones that are gone now). There’s a very good quote by AJ Liebling on boxing that said something along the lines of that the glory days of boxing and the best eras are never in one place. That it depends on who you ask and what year they were born. The tendency is that yesteryear usually ends up being described as the “better days”. Whether it’s 10 years or back, or 50 years, people never acknowledge that their own time might be better than the past. Maybe in fifty years from now, we’ll be talking about how broccoli-haired new guy on the block could never hang with even a Rolly Romero or Buatsi from current times…and it’ll go on and on.

As far as the second in bold, I personally never do that. Maybe when I first started following boxing nearly twenty years ago…but these days I’m not even gonna’ waste the slightest bit of energy.
Thank you for this reply. It's the perfect blend of introspection and perspective that is rare to find on the internet.

I actually found an article I wrote in 2004 for ESB (as it was known at the time) and it struck an optimistic tone about the fights and cynicism about the sanctioning bodies. 20 years on I'm in much the same place now!

It's not really worth it...Riyadh Season (with their stacked undercards) are the only PPV's worth paying for and even they only seem to happen once a quarter.

      Pass.

        .
this is a really good point, who actually was the equivalent of rolly back in the 70's & does this person ever get brought up in comparison points made now presently

in 50 yrs time im thinking if someone is around comparing a new guy to rolly what they may be doing is back hand insulting him or else saying hes going great for what hes got or hes blessed as hes been given the boxing protection for whatever reason, he might have a good pout or something

We all talk like we know and analysis is hard to qualify as “analysis” when we judge our participants of our sport typically on 30 or 36 minutes of work (if that) from fight to fight (if they even go 10 or 12 rounds) whereas NBA/MLB/PGA there’s a large body to work with.

It’s like the first round of a cagey fight where little goes on and we don’t know what we’re looking at really.

“Oh, he’s controlling the distance. He wants to start slow. He’s measuring him.”

We don’t have a calcification of the dynamic of the fight until maybe 3 or 4 rounds in. Otherwise, we’re like fortune tellers rolling dice on the table and flipping tarot cards and pulling rabbits out of our ass to interpret the future.

“Ah! The tarot card of Damascus…this means that the blue corner opponent will fail to come out to fight 8th round.”

Dude... I would pay good money for that tussle. One of those two may likely just fall out from the pure effort of standing off their stools later on in the fight, and who would want to miss that????

If they were to offer a yearly subscription that shaves a few dollars off the 12 month cost of paying the monthly fee, I "might" be tempted to see how things shake out. Subscribe, enjoy the content, and see what PPV fights are included against those that are not. But I have forced myself to shave quite a bit off the entertainment budget so I need a tempting offer.

Meh, they'll be on YT minutes after the fights end if you know where to look.

Eubank/Benn was entertaining the first time, so I can understand the PPV paywall. However, there's been some recent PPVs like Parker/Wardley and Itauma/Whyte that probably shouldn't have been, especially for the U.S. audience.

It seems like the typical DAZN PPV rate is $60-70. $400usd still seems like a good deal for a minimum of 12 PPVs.
