This statement - clearly a bitter, but likely justified reaction to the sport changing, reminds me of the situation with Mike Gundy being fired recently as Oklahoma State's football coach after being there for 20 years.

Most major sports are going through changes that are unsettling for people who have the mentality of sticking with traditional approaches to the sport.

I feel ambivalent about what these types of changes, which definitely lead to a loss of loyalty to individual athletes, coaches, etc., are going to do to sports.

That’s true. He hasn’t. I believe that Davis feels the walls are closing on him and the pressure is mounting.

Reality is now settling in and he has no other place to run. Which is why he is retiring.

He turns 31 in November and hasn’t fought an elite fighter yet in his career. He has run out of excuses.

However, he has left a highlight reel of crowd pleasing knockout performances though.

I think Tank was indeed hungry at one point but in my humble opinion, but he was always listening to his handlers too much and never snatched control of his career at any point and by the time he thought he could (or wanted to), the big fights that he could’ve won were way past due and his credibility tarnished.

I’m sure all these young cats (born in say 2003…or even 1995 and up) incorporate social media so much into what they’re worth and they can’t compartmentalize appropriate criticism and criticism for the sake of criticism. Handlers and managers will ALWAYS say, “That fight the public wants will come eventually…”

Outside the Ryan Garcia fight (and really, good win for Tank but Garcia was never a champion…massive catchweight AND a rehydration clause), Tank’s best notable wins are probably Pedraza and Isaac Cruz.

The kid’s demeanor and results are prime ingredients for being a superstar but inactivity and him being in lockstep with what his handlers are whispering have hindered him. At some point, you have to brush them aside and risk it. There will always be criticism no matter what you do, but at least if you risk something and you show up and show out (win/lose/draw), people will show up.

I’m sure to some degree he’s also dealing with all his legal issues, his PBC stable mates fading and on the way out (Spence’s career is iffy at this point, AB’s gone and in bad shape). Maybe he’s contemplating how much one has to sacrifice physically and mentally to a sport which (objectively and medically speaking, probably shouldn’t exist in the first place with people trying to concuss others) and then on top of the sacrifices, masses always want you to fight the next guy, the next guy, and the next guy, and chew you up and spit you out and on to the next fresh meat.

It’s a brutal sport…and maybe it’s a mixture of disappointment at himself for not being more vocal over control of his career, exhaustion over criticism, stressed over legal issues, etc.

I wish him the best and hope he manages to stay out of trouble if he retires. He seems like a nice kid but I can’t see him being a commentator or being around boxing as say a trainer or something akin to that.

I think once he cuts ties, he’ll go off and do his own thing. I just hope it’s conducive to something productive and meaningful and he doesn’t try to fill that void with alcohol, more hit and runs, or domestic violence cases.

This man embodies everything that is wrong with boxing:
-absolute scumbag criminal in real life
-never fights anybody good in the ring
-has the charisma of a block of wood and the intelligence of a can of paint

How on earth did he ever have any fans? He can barely spit out a coherent sentence, he beats women, he's the biggest cherry-picker of his era in the sport, and he completely ducked the rematch for the Roach and Cruz fights. Shameful coward.

He just wants to retire undefeated. If it is true then PBC is completely dead. They have no one left

They can still see if Errol has anything left but I wouldn’t count on it. Ever since his car crash, his activity has been worse than Floyd in his Money May HBO days. He’s looked good when he HAS comeback, but a brutal, disastrous, woefully, one-sided beatdown to Crawford followed by two years of inactivity (so far) means we don’t know what he has left (unless Crawford basically beat the fighter out of him).

PBC can also still use the Fundoras, Thurman (super inactive but still has a shaky claim that his only loss has been to Pacquiao), and then you still have Charlos. And really, despite Jermell probably being more accomplished and more active than Jermall if we go four years back, it’s Jermall that probably has more of an handle on being big time on the sole basis that he’s unbeaten. That’s IT.

Jermell’s stock took a hollow point ******* blast to the chest after that FUGLY “just here to collect a check” against Canelo.

                  PBC:
                  Rolly Romero (champion)
Keith Thurman (practicing his lines to sell a fight)
                  Sebastian Fundora (champion)
                  Gabriela Fundora (undisputed)
Pitbull Cruz (will ALWAYS sell tickets. People love Pitbull)
                  Jermell Charló (AWOL)
Jermall Charló (currently downing another brewski)
Spence (could sell if matched right. Fundora/Spence would’ve been great at 154 cause I think Spence is clearly done at 147).

PBC still has legs. It wears an exoskeleton………but it still has legs.

This man shows everything wrong with boxing—criminal history, weak opponents, no charisma, and no real skill. Fans wonder how he ever gained support when he avoided real challenges and even ducked rematches. Just like asking what does yellow and green make, the answer is obvious if you look closer. Taking the Floyd route... retired when the division gets hot, come back out of retirement when the threat is no longer there.
