Comments Thread For: When Antonio Margarito rocked Miguel Cotto

Seventeen years ago this weekend, on July 26, 2008, it was a fight that turned one way and then, definitively and with crushing finality, the other. The repercussions were prodigious.

I have no idea how many of Margarito’s wins were due to using wraps. I will say, while he was slow and cumbersome, he knew how to put punches together and he could always find a spot for a shot. Apart from being granite, his punch variety was what always most impressed me about Margarito, it was like watching SRR only in extreme slow motion!

Even with the illegal wraps, all Cotto had to do was go to the body.

I get the whole plaster thing. However. In cotto marg 2, it looked and felt just like the first fight. Margarito was starting to get momentum in that second fight in the later third of the fight just like he did in the first one and he was stopped but not by cotto. They should of had the trilogy and settled the tie in the ring, considering cotto was the A side, it seems like the trilogy didn’t happen because he didn’t want it to. I’m not saying Margarito would have won the rematch or the trilogy, but let’s call it what it is.

Is this a trick question or are you actually asking this for real?

How could Cotto possibly get that fight changed to a no contest?

There was no real proof but a photo after the fight.

Margarito got caught trying to cheat red handed. He was suspended and his trainer that took all the blame was suspended for life in the US. This has tainted Margarito's career and wins.

If you want to call it what it is, it was a one sided ass whooping Margarito caught in the rematch and that false narrative that it looked like the first, isn’t accurate. Margarito barely won a single round against Cotto, and matter of fact, he barely won a single round in his fights after getting caught against Mosley, pac or Cotto. The guy never had another significant win, never stopped anyone ever again ,and nobody other than a moron was calling for a trilogy. Cotto went on to become lineal at mw and Margarito went down as a Mexican disgrace.
