absolutely fantastic fighter. i wish him a happy retirement. i wanted him to retire 5 years ago. lighter weights should be tough fights until you are 30 and then a couple of retirement fight and that's it. in the end they sacrificed him to younger american boxers to build them up, like they always do. i never wanted him to fight young boxers from the next generation.
he could have easily done more if rigo and arum weren't dumb at the time.
- rigo (lineal at 122) at 126. 1 division jump for the lineal champion and p4p fighter at the time. much more worth would be in that win but rigo wanted it at 124 pounds at most. ****** decision since he later moved up 2 divisions when he reazlied his mistake.
- walters at 126 to crown a lineal featherweight champion. they were top2 there and their fight at 130 meant much less.
- at 130 i would have liked uchiyama but martinez was ok. next i wanted loma - vargas. loma's mandatory was berchelt but he decided not to wait for loma and fight vargas. berchelt won and became #2 below loma. top2 in the division, logical fight to make. never happened. i was so angry.
- linares at 135 was bigger than anything else at that moment and it was great. i wanted loma - mikey badly for the lineal title and later undisputed. mikey hated arum and that was never going to happen. then loma picked up 3 of 4 belts while commey picked up the ibf title. loma and commey were both with arum, 1 year apart, logical undisputed fight. but no. who cares about africans and ukranians (before the war)? let's just give them on a plate to an american spoiled brat 10 years younger. i hate this with a passion.
- whether loma somehow fought mikey or commey for the lineal title at 135, i wanted him to retire or attempt to beat josh taylor. that would have been for the 4th lineal title and something like top30 p4p of all time.
to sum this up: rigo at 126, walters at 126, berchelt at 130, commey at 135 (in 2019 or 2020) and josh taylor after that were all in house or VERY makeable fights. that's 3 fights with different timing and 2 different available choices to become 4 divison lineal champion + 1 win over a lineal champion one division below (which is great in my opinion regardless of names). he was very near this phenomenal achievement. ultimately, loma was ZERO times lineal champion which is just sad to be honest.
ps. i wanted mikey - loma then crawford - mikey for mikey's chance to become an atg. but since he already burnt bridges with arum, those fights weren't going to happen realistically.

Probably one of the most talented fighters I’ve ever seen. Guy was phenomenal especially down at 126-130. Even at 135 in a weight class he shouldn’t have really been in he still was able to outclass and beat guys just on pure skill and boxing IQ. Shame he didn’t get the decision in the Haney fight to become undisputed so he didn’t get to live that dream but he still had a fantastic career in 21 fights. He probably could have had a couple more but you could tell for a whlie he just didn’t have the passion to keep on fighting and he doesnt seem like a guy who’s gonna stick around just for money. Hope he enjoys retirementLast edited by Jamesboxing; 06-05-2025, 10:24 PM.

Yeah he has had a great career but he could have done way more. If he won Haney or Teo those would have been big wins. He could have also fought Shakur and Tank yet decided to retire cause he has no motivation yet held the belt hostage for a year.

Linares got stopped by Demarco who was dominated by Valero and Broner. The Ax man Walters victory was a good one, but thats about it. Weak opposition and just when the weight classes around him started filling up with some talent he lost to Teofimo and Haney. He is not top 50 all time in the pros. In the amateurs he is top 5 all time.

Thank you, Loma.
You were one of the great modern day fighters, who had an ol' school mentality, in a world of Twitter champions.
In an era where guys were forced to fight you at 130 & 135 in your prime, you'd probably be even more well-regarded.
