It's a knockdown whether a punch lands or not.

If a fighter takes a knee for any reason it's a knockdown.

For example Miguel Cotto took a knee vs Antonio Margarito when no punch was thrown, so he took a count.

Mayweather's turned his back and touched his glove on the canvass when he broke his hand vs Carlos Hernandez, so he took a count.

2) Pretty cheesy way of scoring a KD. As a fighter, I wouldn't want to get credit for knocking my opp down without landing a punch
3) Cotto was a mess. Many solid punches did land just prior to. Huge diff.
4) Imagine losing a rd/fight because your glove touched the canvass.......

You're correct, but I mentioned the legal punch to contrast with other situations where a fighter might end up on a knee (a low blow, a headbutt, an elbow, a slip, a push, a fighter dropping their weight on a bent over opponent, etc) that wouldn't necessarily count as a knockdown. But, absolutely, if you just take a knee of your own accord it's a knockdown with or without a punch.

Those are the rules of boxing. Every fighter, except apparently Tank Davis, understands that they can't just take a knee of their own accord without being counted for a knockdown. Every fight takes place with both fighters operating under that pretext.

If the knockdown had been scored correctly the scorecards would've been 115-112, 114-113, 114-113 UD win for Roach. This is as flagrant of a robbery as there could possibly be.
