The evidence is there to be seen, he got hit, complained to ref who acknowledged the foul and the eye began to swell, and you suggested on a previous post that the grazing last punch ended the fight. That was not a grazing punch, man. It was a good punch that landed right on the eye. I just reviewed it. I don’t think it was enough to break the orbital bone, but who knows? What I do know is that Ramirez was evidently complaining about double vision from an elbow prior to the end.

My thing is, Team Ramirez apparently complained about elbows and double-vision in-between rounds five and six. The moment Robeisy took a punch directly to the supposedly affected eye, he waved off. The eye socket is reportedly busted. It all seems to fit. I see no reason for Ramirez to make false claims about an elbow foul to his eye and the ensuing double-vision. He was pretty clearly, I think, winning the fight up to that point. At the very least he had taken zero punishment. I daresay the final punch was Espinoza’s best of the fight. Just a shame about it all: the injury; a long-anticipated fight ending with a fizzle; a reputation tarnished, etc.

You have to copy and paste in yt. I saw the punch but not as flush as you said. The link I provided has different angles, in any case he already had his eye swelling and between rounds, before that punch, he complained to Salas about this issue which was confirmed at the hospital, why espinoza repeatedly did this? I don't know but he did and he was losing the fight hands down, Ramirez came with a different approach, and being the better boxer was paying off, really a shame that divino took that path to victory.

I’ve been unable to find definitive video evidence of an elbow landing in the fifth. I don’t know what point in the fight the picture below is taken from, but it’s a pretty clear shot. My feelings about the topic hinge on various anecdotal factors. One: Espinoza threw elbows in the first encounter. I saw at least one myself, and the announcers repeatedly made mention of it in the rematch, so there was a history. Two: Divino was warned by the ref for one blatant elbow we all saw clearly in the first round. Three: Ramirez was winning the fight without having received virtually any significant punches to the face. In fact, I would say that easily the best punch Espinoza landed was the one that made Robeisy quit. It was a good punch, certainly, but nothing extraordinary. Was it enough to fracture an orbital bone? Possibly, but I don’t think so. Four: We’re told that Ramirez complained to his trainer at the end of the fifth that he had been elbowed in his eye and was seeing double. We’re further told that Salas asked him to go out for the next round and “see how he felt.” (An idea that even without the benefit of hindsight seems ill-advised. The ref should’ve been made aware of what was happening, and a doctor called to assess the situation.)

Anyway, what’s done is done. Robeisy indeed quit, albeit within understandable grounds; Espinoza retains the belt; and life goes on.

Where garfios and I differ is that he's sure that it was deliberate, and I think there's sufficient evidence to support alternate explanations. Frankly, proving intent is a very high bar. Try it in a courtroom sometime and see how it goes. Is it possible he's a dirty fighter? Sure. But the preponderance of evidence not only doesn't support such a strong conclusion, but in fact makes it less likely IMO.

You’re right. It does appear to be from round one. My sense is that the elbows were intentional. Rewatching the video in slow motion (which they did in round three during the fight), Espinoza first misses with the elbow, keeps it in the air, then re-adjusts and sticks it in Ramirez’s face. Frankly, I never saw more elbow contact in this fight after the first round. I just don’t see why Ramirez would claim elbow fouls and double-vision while in his corner if something didn’t happen. He was doing very well in the fight — winning, if you ask me — and he wasn’t getting hit, really. All of a sudden a well-placed but unremarkable punch lands on his eye and he calls it? It’s all very strange.
