  • Comments Thread For: Richard Torrez Jr. not focused on knockout streak ahead of Joey Dawejko clash

Heavyweight prospect Richard Torrez Jr. said he's trying not to pay too much attention to his knockout streak ahead of Friday's clash with tough Philadelphian Joey Dawejko. Torrez is 10-0 (10 KOs) and the 25-year-old from California has already stopped Donald Haynesworth in one round and Brandon Moore in five in 2024.

A few years ago this would have been a decent step up for torrez to take him some rounds, torrez will blast him out now tho

with all the amateur experience he has om not sure why they are holding him back so much

They're developing Torrez rather than throwing him into the deep end. Smart play financially, but yeah, he's in double digits now - might be time to fight someone with skills rather than size and power.

That's my fear as well. Dawejko was always known for his durability but was stopped in back to back losses. Not sure if the chin is as solid or if the motivation is the same for Joey. I'm hoping he turns the clock back to his old self as a tough gatekeeper but I have my doubts.

Neither have been active in 2024, but I wouldn't mind seeing Torrez in against someone like Jerry Forrest or Jonathan Rice. Both are big, durable guys with some skills and power.

Maybe someone like Kingsley Ibeh who arguably beat Vianello and performed well against Jared Anderson. If these guys are too dangerous, I'd like to see him at least fight someone who will give him rounds and take him deeper in a fight. Maybe Dawejko does that. We'll see.

I think Top Rank sees a guy that could become a tv draw and do good numbers on ESPN long before he fights for a title.

Personally I think this is a good approach because Torrez just turned 25 - hes got plenty of time to develop further.

Boxing is interesting when they start hyping up guys when they've barely had any fights. It puts them in predicaments. On one hand, he's developing, on the other hand, viewers get tired of seeing the developing fighter continue to blast out overmatched opponents. This makes the fans call for them to step up and maybe significantly, only to find out that they were never ready and then the overhyped talk begins.

In the past, (let's say 25 years ago at least), fighters would get up towards 25+ fight and then they started getting noticed and put on watch. I feel like Loma introduced the notion that you can barely have any fights and qualify for a world title in your 2nd bout (lol, he might be the exception to this). Though seriously, now we watch fighters at like 5 fights under their belt and the hype already begins. I'd like to let them fight for a bit in obscurity and build up some solid wins before we start hyping them up and calling them the next best thing.

As awesome as Torres looks now, he can vanish in a heartbeat the second he steps up and a guy doesn't walk up to him with his hands down, head up in the air waiting to eat a power punch from him.

Typical Top Rank bum card. So Munguia escaped Fishnets, huh?

Same reason they held Anderson back so long. Bob sees something he doesn't like.

Torrez's amateur record is 154-10 and he was an Olympic silver medalist.

The two have nothing to do with one another.
