Comments Thread For: 'Fighting Words' -- Revisiting Vergil Ortiz-Serhii Bohachuk and settling some misconceptions

There is text, and then there is subtext. As promoter Tom Loeffler and trainer Manny Robles spoke following Serhii Bohachuk's decision loss to Vergil Ortiz Jr. on August 10, there was the text -- they spoke of what they considered an incorrect result, scorecards they believed should have gone their fighter's way.

Bottom line, it was only those 2 10-8 rounds that made the decision controversial. All 3 judges scored both rounds 10-8 and 2 still had Ortiz winning. I don't think 10-8 for both, especially the 8th, was the right score but if I had scored them 10-8, I had it a draw.

On the positive side, Borachuk might have lost on the cards but his performance certainly raises his profile, career wise, the loss did him no harm.

I appreciated the reminder and clarification of the scoring of rounds because some fans don’t have the experience as other fans of following the sport. This the perfect fight for the example that the KDs didn’t portray the nature the fight. This type of fan is easily spotted throwing the word “casual “ at people that have a different opinion

interesting he scored the kovalev ward fight for kovalev but he was ok with the 'razor thin' decision going wards way, thats a swing from the correct winner past a draw to the guy who he didnt think he won lol, ok whatever u say so, it was 'razor thin' afterall, as in just reached 1 round lol, people just use these phrases to make themselves feel better i think

Nothing that the author says is incorrect. However, it gets stale when nearly every time the benefit of a doubt is given....it is given to the fighter with the promotional backing.

Sure, sometimes overall punch counts don't reflect a round. Sometimes a knockdown is scored 10-9 rather than 10-8, sometimes a fighter will win a fight despite getting knocked down multiple times...but how often do these things happen to the fighter without promotional backing?

I don't direct this to Ortiz specifically in this fight but to the nature of boxing in general....

needs be mandatory interview of judges. and seen some ppl tried score 9-9 in knockdown rds. which is not how to score according to rules. that can only happen on point deduction...not sure if article stated this because I didn't read it all

It’s amazing how people can come to different conclusions after watching the same fight. I personally, thought Ortiz did enough to win that fight.

However, the vast majority of boxing fans didn’t see it that way. Most of them had Bohachuk winning. Which I find very interesting.

Yes, Ortiz fought off the back foot and got dropped but at no point in that fight where I saw he was in danger of getting stopped from taking too much punishment.

I agree. It was a close competitive fight and it was only those two rounds that made the scores that close. Ortiz did not seem hurt in those rounds, but if you score it according to the rules, it makes for a very close fight on the scorecards. I have no problem with Ortiz winning - visually he seemed the more impressive fighter who probably deserved a close win. I did not score the fight round by round because I enjoyed the action too much.
