They have always been great boxers.

Honestly, Jalolov could win a world title at pros tomorrow.

Much better and more dangerous fighter than half of top 10 pros in division.

Uzbekistan’s taken Cuba’s place as the best amateur boxing program in the world. Of course, it helps that Cuban athletes are leaving the island in droves. Cuba had a total of eight medals at the Paris Olympics, but Cuban athletes won eight medals for other countries. A Cuban boxer representing Azerbaijan, Loren Alfonso, beat Juio Cesar La Cruz of Cuba and went on to win a silver medal this year.

did Soviets teach Cubans boxing or did it develop independently?

Great insights! Yeah Cuba has shown that kind of dominance and are always ready to fight for other nations, who can blame them?

I can give you a few insights... I know from martial arts that when a gifted teacher sets up in an area and starts to produce students, given a proper environment, the result will be excellence. For example, Take Bruce Lee and Oakland. Lee was in Oakland for a bit, and Oakland happens to be a real hard scrabble environment. Consequently his students in that area developed a reputation for being great fighters...

Cuba has a boxing culture. You see some similarities with Puerto Rico... and Puerto Ricans. I grew up in East Harlem and every Puerto Rican friend of mine seemed to have a boxing set up somewhere. It was part of the culture. Cuba and Puerto Rico have produced great fighters, Cuba has an appreciation for the technical aspects and the toughness... When you get these aspects and a great trainer, who teaches other trainers, you get results. I do not think it has anything to do with the soviets but that is just an opinion.
