Coward? Bit strong considering most will not even jump in a ring... Fans love to throw such terms around... Lewis was a "coward" to some after he gut checked and beat Vitalie, because he did not grant a rematch... Canelo has nothing to prove to anyone and he is not a coward.

Ewww…just no.
You said top five in your original post, you didn’t actually specify all time. But I’ll acquiesce.
Second, out of curiosity, you don’t think Canelo is at least somewhere in the top 10 Mexican fighters (of all time)?
He’s gotta’ be up there regardless of whatever alienation he may have done to his fan base in Mexico and his reluctance to fight Benny.Comment

I think GGG gets into the HOF eventually, though. Maybe not in his first year, but at worst in this third year of eligibility. Those nearly 20 middleweight title defenses weren’t for nothing. I don’t think GGG was past it when Canelo fought him in my opinion. Some people like to bring up the Jacobs as the writing on the wall that GGG was past it but Jacobs was still very good back then. And I thought that Jacobs a few years later did much better against Canelo than the judges gave him credit for.
Anyway…maybe toppling Benavidez will dispel that notion eventually.
Not Berlanga, though. **** that dude. LolComment

Alright, that’s fair.

Canelo beating Jacobs is one of the better fights on Canelo's resume but Jacobs alreaady had 2 losses which is why it's not the legacy defining fight Canelo needs. I had Canelo edging out a victory in the 2nd GGG fight but it wasn't clear cut for most thus leaving a sour taste in most people's mouth.
Canelo clearly beating Benavidez or rematching Bivol and getting the victory would be that special moment were even his biggest detractors are forced to accept his is a legendary fighter.
From my point of view I have Canelo tagged as a great fighter but not legendary, at that seems to be common notion amongst Mexican fans and media (from Mexico). All legends are great but not all greats are legends.Comment

Canelo and GGG are for sure going into the Hall of Fame, probably both first ballot too imo. I think Jacobs will also eventfully make it too, in a weaker year.

I think the first GGG-Canelo fight was shaky, but I thought Canelo was more convincing in the second. Both were close, but I see where you’re coming from.
Beating Bivol in a rematch where everyone would have Canelo as a major underdog would be a big deal. I think Bivol is a more difficult mountain to climb because Bivol is naturally bigger, fine tuned boxer, and just absolutely disciplined.
If I were Canelo, I’d take Benavidez over Bivol in a heartbeat. Canelo can’t beat a 175 pounder of that caliber.Last edited by TintaBoricua; 07-31-2024, 10:01 PM.Comment
