Very good article. I would like to go back in time and attend one of these epic fights from the early days of boxing: Sullivan vs Kilrain, Sullivan vs Corbett, any of the Dempsey fights, Johnson vs Willard, etc.

Not even a good fight, now, if you want an epic bareknuckle brawl, Cribb v Molyneux was genuinely epic, as well as being the first world title fight. AND, there was a very controversial decision!

They were made of some very stern stuff back then, and that was really all bare bareknuckle boxing, mixed in with throws.

Those very tough times made tough men. That is not to say many outstanding combat sports fighters today haven't been through hell on earth, as some have.

                  A great fight!

Boxing history is an amazing study.
John L. Sullivan vs. Jake Kilrain, July 8, 1889, at Richburg, Mississippi marked the last time, after some 2,577 years, that the world championship would be contested with bare knuckles; this contest using the London Prize Ring rules. Going forward, the title would be won and lost using the Marquess of Queensberry rules, adding gloves and timed rounds.

Tom Cribb vs. Tom Molineaux, December 18, 1810, at Copthorne Gap, near Surrey, England; Tom Molineaux, the first fighter from the United States to fight for a world title, fought Tom Cribb, England’s “Champion of Champions” in the first of their two fights. This was not the first World title fight, but it did mark the first time an American challenged for the title, and the first Black man to do so.

Jack Slack vs. Jean Petit, July 29, 1751, at Harlston, Norfolk, England; was the first modern Word title fight, as the English bare-knuckle champion fought a difficult battle to repell the challenge of the giant French challenger.

All of these were milestone battles in the history of Boxing.
