But when AJ beat them they weren't....
Heh
Ya'll Fury fans are hilarious
I guess Usyk only beat Fury because his country is at War or Fury really won by decision because it was an easy fight
Smh
It's about being objective when comparing both AJ and Fury. If Fury gets criticism for fighting Whyte and Chisora who were coming off wins over Povetkin and Pulev. Criticism has to be aimed at AJ for fighting 3 guys comings off losses in his last 4 fights. Whilst all the other contenders were fighting each other.
People denigrate Wilder for losing at the end of his career to Parker and Zhang, and claim it ruins Fury's legacy. But they don't consider a lot of AJ's wins went on to lose fights after he beat them (Whyte, Martin, Brezeale, Povetkin, Parker, Pulev all lost after AJ beat them).
It's just about being consistent with criticism.

Whyte, undefeated at that time.
Martin, also undefeated and reigning IBF champ.

Parker, undefeated WBO champ.
Povetkin.
Pulev.
Wallin. That's a much better resume than Wilder's and, imo, also better than Fury's.
The Whyte win was good, but Whyte was pretty green at the time with no world level experience, although the same was the case for AJ. However I'd say Fury's 2nd win over Chisora was a better win. Chisora who was reigning Euro champ, coming off wins over Gerber and Scott, who'd also been robbed against Helenius and had fought Vitali over 12 rounds. And was considered a favourite by some going into that 2nd Fury fight.
Parker is one of AJ's best wins. He did go on to lose to Whyte the fight after and also had a super close fight with Chisora, before beating him more comprehensively in the rematch, before losing the Joyce. But his two last fights certainly elevate his standing. Is it better than Fury over Whyte who by that point was a bonafide contender? Maybe but there's not a lot in it.
Povetkin was a solid win for AJ. Although in his next fight he was lucky to get away with a draw against Michael Hunter. But all things considered, Povetkin is a technically better fighter than Wilder but being objective there's no way it's a better win than undefeated Wilder. Wilder has a better record than Povetkin.
Pulev a solid contender but his best win is probably Chisora. Likewise Chisora's best official win is probably Pulev, who he beat 18 months or so after AJ. And given Chisora had been having close fights with the likes of Parker and Whyte in recent years, and was coming off the back of that Pulev win when Fury fought him the 3rd time it's not unfair to AJ > Pulev and Fury > Chisora are similar wins.
Wallin - AJ and Fury's wins probably cancel each other out. Although the fashion AJ beat him in was more impressive
Ruiz - Is a tough one. He wasn't given a chance against AJ. He was better than people gave him credit for, but it's a blemish on AJ's legacy he lost to him, especially after he's knocked him down heavily. He won the rematch, but Ruiz has only fought twice since then and that was 4 and half years ago.
And there's the Wilder 3 win for Fury that also trumps a lot of the above too, or at least trumps AJ's wins since losing to Usyk in the rematch.
I'm not ****ting on AJ here. Because he's been a great heavyweight all things considered. But I think it's a bit of a myth that his record is better than Fury's. Because when you break it down, it doesn't hold up.Last edited by Grimmer; 06-25-2024, 07:16 AM.kafkod likes this.
