In his 25th fight he fought Damon McCreary. McCreary was coming off a 2 year absence since winning a decision in a 4 rounder. That fight was his only one in 5 years.
You can talk about knockout ratios but what is a knockout like that worth? McCreary fought 7 more times, losing 6, and never made it beyond the 2nd round.

Wilder turned pro at 23 after a short but successful amateur career. Only about 35 fights I believe including the Olympic Bronze.
Joyce turned pro at 32 after an extensive and successful amateur career. Multiple ABA titles, Commonwealth Gold, Olympic Silver, World and European Bronze.
It’s not rocket science really, why one was moved slowly whilst the other had to be moved to quickly in terms of progression.Comment

Very good points, and again, Wilder fought him when he was the reigning WBC champion and a consensus top 4 fighter in the independent rankings. Joyce fought him when he was 273 pounds and coming off a 17 month layoff after Wilder absolutely mauled him in the rematch.Comment

Wilder was 29 when he fought Stiverne, genius
Plus, Stiverne was the champion, so Wilder had to fight him to win the title.Comment
