Fighting in the desert on the other side of the world gives up a massive advantage. If this fight was at Old Trafford in Manchester the place would have been a pro-Fury bearpit. The fans make a massive difference in these big fights. Arab oil money has ripped the soul out of boxing in this regard. You cannot deny that there are benefits from having a partisan home crowd. The fans can drive a fighter on to victory in a fight of this magnitude.
I scored the fight as follows:
To think that the judges had the "knockdown" winning it for Usyk is mad. If that "knockdown" hadn't happened it would have been a Draw. Quite mad really, I felt Usyk won it down the stretch. Threw more, held centre, threw more, tried to jump on Fury when he did have success.
Fury lost no doubt about it. A lot of Tyson’s shortcomings last night, you have to consider, was he bad or was Usyk just that good? Can’t take away from what Usyk achieved last night, he achieved Greatness. If you put Usyk in the top 10 Heavies of all time now, he would be by far the most decorated in the top 10. Olympic Gold. Undisputed, Lineal champion in two divisions, one being the marquee division of Boxing, is an outstanding achievement. Ranks far, far higher than fighters like Mayweather, Pacquaio etc cherry-picking and weight-draining opponents to win paper titles at multiple weights. Usyk is a true champion and he has cleared out two divisions with some serious opposition standing in the opposite corner. Conquering champion after champion. Nothing but respect for Usyk and his team.
I don’t get the tactics in Fury’s corner. I don’t get why there wasn’t more urgency as the fight ebbed and flowed. The body shots were troubling Usyk but this was not expressed in the corner enough. Too calm, no change in advice when the fight started to slip away, telling Tyson he was up on the cards throughout. Sugar Hill Steward too laid-back for me. John Fury on the ring apron telling Tyson he was winning in the 11th and 12th. Daft.
Virgil Hunter? Bo-Mac? Does Eddy Reynoso speak English?
Between the Ngannou fight and last night, there are clear signs of Fury’s physical decline. Cannot move like he used to, footwork, pivots and explosiveness seem to have abandoned him. No more bouncing on toes early doors, flat-footed before the halfway stage. Just not the same, this isn’t an excuse, if you know what you’re watching you must see it. Also seems like his defensive reflexes just aren’t what they were. Standing tall, leaving his head straight on not protecting his chin. One of Fury’s best attributes was always his elusivity, watching him slip and evade shots. Some of his flashier finishes have been catching and countering. This elusiveness has eluded him for a few fights now, there to be hit now.
If the rematch happens I don’t know what this version of Fury with this team behind him does differently. Will the rematch be a more conclusive repeat? Would a new trainer make a difference? Is Fury shot?
If the rematch does happen, Fury should say “Fook it!” and go all-in. 270-275 lb. High-guard, hold the centre, push Usyk to the ropes. Body body body. Hold him, lean on him, rough him up as much as possible. Absolutely no showboating. No John Fury. Go out on your shield, this version of Fury cannot win a boxing match against Usyk.
There will always be interest in AJ-Fury. Judging from both of their recent performances, I think the fight would be a lot closer now than it would have 3-4 years ago. AJ would have success against this version of Fury, and if he hurt him he very well could end the fight. He has the tools. Would be a grizzly end to see AJ brutalize a shot Fury, like.
Maybe Usyk is just that good though. Maybe it’s disrespectful to Usyk to say Tyson is on the decline and that’s why he lost. That isn’t the case, Usyk has always been Elite, and he showed it once more last night.
Props to the Rabbit. And commiserations to the Gypsy King. We are not Spartans. We are Celts and Gaels.
P.S. If I've wound any of you fookers up with my Fury posts in recent years, feel free to gloat in here lol. That goes for anyone but @RobbieBarrett. Can't stand that lad.
Peace. Respect to the Gypsy King. Respect to Usyk, King of Heavyweights. Last night was very fooking feel.
I scored the fight as follows:
- Round 1 to Usyk, Fury slow to get started
- Round 2, 3 to Fury, Fury's good body shots got a reaction
- Round 4, 5, and 6 close could have gone either way but I gave 2 to Fury and 1 to Usyk
- 4-2 Fury after 6, can understand someone seeing it differently, the momentum was with Fury
- Round 7 to Usyk, Usyk went up a gear, triggered by Fury showboating and lax defence
- Round 8 to Usyk, Fury eased off and the nose damage started to affect him
- Round 9 to Usyk 10-8, lol @ people saying it should have been stopped
- Round 10 and 11 to Usyk, 10 a recovery round for Fury, 11 better but Usyk still won it
- Round 12 to Fury, could be another pick’em round though
