  • Let us call the Haney Ryan fight what it is, then it might sell!

Part of boxing appeal has always been the potential for danger. Hidden alongside the craft, the excellence on display watching the greatest fighters has been the shadows... Would Max Bauer kill James Braddock? Would Tyson unhinge Golota? And when things happened of the sort it attracted press. Many people from my generation best remember Rid**** Bowe for the spectacular clash where a cell phone was first tested against the density of a human skull, during the Golota fight, and the new aerodynamics involved with parachuting into a ring during a fight(Holyfield).

We love to root for the underdog, Rocky! Gatti!!! But alas, we also love a spectacular train wreck. Train wrecks sell at least as well as the narrative of the fighter overcoming odds to win.

Floyd could not sell a fight to save his life, until he perfected the role of the heel when fighting the wholesome, All Mexican-American Chicano Golden Boy, Oscar De Le Hoya... Never mind that Oscar had a few unsavory aspects... Bronner who chiefly was able to pick out accidental champions, never sold a fight on his skills, but rather as the one people wanted to see punched in the face.

Ryan is going off the reservation... There is no question about it really. The privalege, delight, people take in watching this unfold is the selling point of this fight. Let us be real here. Nobody who understands boxing really thinks Ryan has a chance to win this fight. That is not the selling point of the fight!

Market the fight accordingly and people will buy it. Haney could be in a career changing moment if he plays his cards right.

You're still not clear what you mean by this.

There is much irony here... If Ryan breaks apart, people will anxiously get behind efforts to redeem himself. Ryan is a handsome kid, people are sensitive to mental health issues... I know I know the context is off lol, but Ryan actually stands to be in a win win here. if he fights well, he is in the game! And Haney IMO is very good right now which will show in subsequent fights... If he comes apart, well we have lots of female casuals who will adore the tragically flawed, matinee idol handsome "King Ryan."

Think "Oscar De La Hoya" appeal. We used to watch the fights in New York City and my wife would not show much interest. One day Oscar fought and she asks me "who is that guy?" Indeed! lol.

Schadenfreude. The delight one takes in watching the misfortune of others. A train wreck being an analogy used to describe the process of someone coming apart. So people buying the fight to watch Ryan self destruct in the ring... Hope this makes the point more clear.

Nah, nobody would buy such thing. They'd rather just watch that on Youtube after the fight. Garcia still has a lot of fans wishing for him to win. That's what people buy. Hope. Hope that he could still pull it. Give them hope. Of course, he has haters who would be buying, anyways. Hate sells.

The thing is, Ryan still has fans and people are worried about him, but it seems really unlikely that he can win, and way more likely that he's deluding himself into thinking he can compete with the top dogs, and I don't know that people are all that interested in watching him self-destruct.

And Haney has been busy playing the heel, but doesn't seem to have the power to knock Ryan out for those who might want to see that.

So when the heel likely can't be beat and doesn't have a fan friendly style, and the other guy looks like a half second away from a(nother) massive mental breakdown, and isn't there enough to even put up a good fight, it just feels like the sort of fight that isn't worth paying for because you know how it's going to go, and it's going to be depressing to watch anyways.

devin haney is 1/10 on to win, its hard to selll a fight when there is such a clear favourite... the same teen girls that follow garcia on tiktok dont get given enough pocket money to be able to afford to buy a PPV

I don't see the disagreement here. You contradict yourself (the bolded) and I agree that all these themes sell. Hope is another one which I mentioned.

No contradiction. There are haters, then there are fans of particular fighters, then there are those in the middle who just want to see good fights regardless of who wins. All groups may or may not be in equal proportions, but every promoter should target all buyers not just haters. But promoting is a loose thing. Many factors surround it. It can't all be any one responsible for it. Not so simple as you think. Garcia's behavior weeks ago made it all complicated. Some fans started to think he may pull out, so...that may have screwed up everything in terms of selling the fight.
