Yeah, there were a lot of Pinoys on social media this morning basically saying the same thing. I had originally thought they were saying "Boxing is dead" but they meant in the Philippines.

In the grand scheme of things Japan has been far ahead of the Philippines for most of modern history. The 2000s were a blip on the radar. In the history of boxing only the US, Mexico, and the UK have produced more world champions (major sanctioning body, Ring, or lineal titlists only) than Japan. The Philippines is 9th on the list.

Not to mention from the 70s on basically flyweight to bantamweight has been essentially the best division for Japanese boxing given their natural average height, and it is just returning to the norm after the 00s dark age so to speak ended. Most prospects start in the flyweight range and as they put on bulk move up to bantamweight where their peak of the career comes.

I'm disregarding superbantam for now because the current freak Japanese monster that is their is a total outlier.

Think of it this way: Filipinos are looking for the next face of Filipino boxing. Now with Pacquiao retired and Donaire almost retired, now is the time to make a name for yourself.

I seriously think flyweight is the best weight class for a Filipino boxer to aim to become a champion in the near future. With Bam having moved back up to superfly, it is a division that doesn't have a clear cut number one on the horizon.

Take out Pacquiao and Japan has always been the top of Asian Boxing. Their lineup was and still is the deepest with numerous champions at the lower weight divisions.

Korea had legit killers back in the 70s-80s but today, Boxing is dead there.

Pacman carried Philippines on his back for the past 20 years but there is nobody else to take the torch.

Japan continues to produce quality fighters and that probably wont change. Japanese are nothing to *** with. Their foundation is too solid.

While fighters like Tapales, Quarto, Saludar, Jerusalem, Sultan, Magsayo, Ancajas and Donaire seem to be declining, (whether it's age, weight cutting or lack of motivation) I am sure the Phillipines will be produce good fighters at any point.

Though most prospect are likely busy building up their experience at the moment and the veterans are unlikely to retain a title for long in the mean time.

Not from Asia, but Mexico is at a similar spot with Canelo and Estrada, they are declining and while there is some good entertaining quality fighters like Navarrete, Ramirez, Lopez, Cruz, Zepeda and Munguia. They might get a belt but they aren't exactly ATG quality type talent like Nakatani and Inoue who are complete accomplished fighters.

Rafael Espinoza just pulled the upset with Robeisy Ramirez, but yet to see how he fights other type of opposition. At least he has time to prove it I suppose. Not like he struggles making weight despite his height and he wasn't worn down by fights outside of fighting Robeisy.

Think the early 2020's will be Japan and Australia time to shine in the boxing scene.
