  • Building a strong non-US scene

America's gonna America. This is not a post about wanting or expecting them to change. For whatever reason, Americans en masse prefer style over substance. Hence Jake Paul being one of the highest paid boxers, a former wrestler being one of their favourite actors and the Kardashians being a thing.

"Ordinary ass" (in reference to Bivol), "random Euros holding titles" (Janibek) and "Eurobums" are some of the comments seen from Americans. And yet, an American can put an undefeated run together against a string of cans, have tattoos and gold teeth, and suddenly they're on the verge of P4P lists.

It's notable that the Saudi project has had few Americans involved with it. This is opening opportunities for non-US boxers to make good money and showcase their skills: Opetaia is a recent example. I'm dubious how long this will last though.

I think there needs to be more cross promotion. The Germans had a strong scene and put on some great events during the Klitschko era. The Japanese have had a strong scene for several decades with a commission that prioritises quality over quantity, hence for a long time only recognising WBC/WBA titles. Bringing more Japanese boxers to the UK would be great.

In terms of media we need more magazines (online or otherwise) which prioritise raising the profile of non-US boxers. Language barriers make things difficult but are far from insurmountable. If you know of anyone already doing such work, feel free to comment below.

saudis are just a bright flash in the pan, they will leave as fast as they arrived

Not before they make some kind of mockery of the sport imo

Heard Amazon Prime wouldn't even allow for PBC's annual budget, according to Espinoza.

shame that Andrey Ryabinskiy stopped pumping money into boxing as a hobby, he was putting on some great big shows in Russia for a few years.. We need another rich Russian to get involved, because the boxing talent in Russia is huge and endless, yet mostly goes to waste because of lack of shows/activiity/opportunities in the west.

I think something more sustainable than a rich individual needs be the solution. As you say, there's plenty of talent, so they need to be assisted in raising their profiles outside the US-centric bubble.

You don't make boxing more sustainable by not having a strong US scene. The US will always be important in any kind of boxing future beyond the silly unsustainable money being thrown around right now.

But global rights are important too. The Premier League has shown that with the way they package and sell soccer rights, and the boxing rights owners are starting to get the hang of things. DAZN a bit of a leader in that area... if they can actually get the world watching in the areas they service.

I wasn't suggesting weakening the US scene, just having a stronger boxing scene independent of it.

With that said, what is this supposed US "strength"? Jake Paul? Hype jobs like Davis and Garcia who get a disproportionate amount of money and attention? Inactive boxers like Crawford, Spence and the Charlos who are billed as ATGs based on misleading undefeated records?

There are lower profile non-US fighters who could potentially beat all of those guys and they need to be given the opportunity to raise their profiles independent of the US media machine.

I'm not saying US boxing is in good shape... I'm saying a sustainable boxing future needs US boxing to be in decent shape.
