Ward retired shortly after. He knew he didn't have the legs to outbox Bivol. Bivol is long range. Andre's grappling skills wouldn't work.
Ward was the Super Champion, Badou Jack was the Regular Champion, Bivol was the Interim Champion. If Ward hadn't retired he'd have been ordered to face Badou Jack, and if he won it'd have been at least another year before a Bivol mandatory were enforced. Probably longer, knowing the WBA.

There's no way ward would have beaten bivol in a decision and he likely would have gotten stopped by beterbiev in the later rounds. If kov dropped ward, imagine what beterbiev would have done to ward.
Yea, Hopkins, RJJ, Calzaghe all did too. What a moron.

        Ward was 33 yrs old.

he could've continued if he wanted to. but he didn't want to seeing the landscape.

Both Bivol and Beterbiev are proven to be much better than Kovalev ever was.

Andre Ward clearly retired to avoid moving up to fight Jai Opetaia.

Also, Ward heard rumblings of David Benavidez and what a monster he would become and that also had a lot to do with his early retirement.

Very true. Andre Ward clearly lied about retiring due to injuries and body breaking down. He rather preserve his 0 than make millions of dollars more.

At the time of Ward’s retirement, Bivol was 11-0 with his best win being a total destruction of Cedric Agnew, a slick American fighter. I think once Andre Ward caught the replay of that fight, that was when he decided to call it quits.

Don’t get me started with Beterbiev, whose resume was far better than Bivol’s. At the time Ward retired, Beterbiev was 11-0 and had almost murdered Cloud, Page, and Campillo in the ring.

Ward took the easy way out by fighting Sergey Kovalev two times. Yeah sure, Kovalev was ranked #2 P4P by The Ring, but his resume didn’t compare to Bivol and Beterbiev’s. Kovalev’s best wins entering the Ward fight were: Pascal 2x, Hopkins, Chilemba, Cleverly, Campillo, and Sillah.

They even brought up ward facing bivol and did an hbo edition on bivol where ward visited bivol and gave him props and then interviewed him. They asked ward if he would face bivol and ward laughed it off. He knew what was up.

                    He was a top 3-5 P4P fighter.

Why fight Kovalev but be afraid of somebody not as good as Kovalev?
Kovalev was NEVER better than Bertebiev, not then, not now, not ever.

I can't say they're the reason he retired but I would have Beterbiev and Bivol as clear favourites over Ward, Beterbiev would knock Dre tfo imo
