When did the "muh favourite promoter" cults begin?

Originally posted by dan-b View PostI started regularly watching boxing in 2001, the internet was in its infancy in terms of widespread use, and social media wasn't really a thing (there were message boards but that's about it).
As far as I remember, no one "supported" promoters. They all seemed to be universally despised and just tolerated as a necessary evil. Warren, King and Arum all got regularly panned as conmen and liars.
At some point, this began to change. With new players entering the market (Oscar, Eddie, Haymon), fans began to become emotionally invested. Arguments began springing up on forums and social media about who was "winning" and is more righteous. In the UK, a subset of fans is very invested in the Warren - Hearn rivalry (just read the comment sections under YouTube videos featuring either of them for examples).
These people are so locked into these cults they assume everyone else is, so if you challenge them you're simply accused of being part of the rival faction. I find the Warren fanboys particularly perplexing given how appallingly this man has behaved over the years.
When did this begin and why?
I just don’t fughin get it at all
Lots here don’t understand what a monopoly is towards a business , what it causes and what the outcome is for the fans in this case

My favorite promoter in the 90s was Don King because his PPV lineups were the sht.
I also like GBP from years back. They didnt coddle their fighters as much as other outfits as they matched up their guys pretty tough. This was years ago but I dont know about now.

This thread sparked another round of "muh favourite promoter" idiocy.
Ooba3211 - is there any possibility PittyPat's suggestion could be acted on so that blocked posters don't show up when quoted also?

Bumped following Regge's recent thread: https://www.boxingscene.com/forums/b...l#post32203566
I know this may sound crazy to some, but the success of individual promoters will ebb and flow based on the relative success of their stables. It's nothing to get too emotional or make absolute statements about.
It's a really boring subject, too.kiaba360 likes this.

Think it started in the UK with Queensbury/Matchroom beef. Over here, the rise of PBC is when I can remember people start cheerleading promotions on this side of the pond. Just like people love to scream Floyd catch phrases in boxing debates when they run out of argument "You don't know **** about boxing!!" "No special Effects!!"
I don't remember ppl taking sides with Top Rank/Don King. You just STFU and ordered the fightLast edited by _Rexy_; 03-18-2024, 08:17 AM.dan-b likes this.
