Jermell Charlo Says He’ll Beat Canelo, Then Drop Back Down To 154 To Fight Crawford
    August 7, 2023

Jermell Charlo has it all mapped out: he will engage in back-to-back super fights; one with Canelo Alvarez at super-middleweight, and one with Terence Crawford at light-middleweight. As fans know, Mexican superstar Canelo will next face Charlo, who is currently (but not for long) the unified champion at 154 pounds (the WBO will strip him as soon as he fights Canelo, this on September 30th) – and after that, Charlo says he will drop back down to 154 and fight Terence Crawford.

Taking to social media, Charlo, 35-1-1(19) and inactive since May of last year due to a hand injury, says he will “shock the world” in the Canelo fight, and that he will then fight Crawford, this after Crawford has or has not given Errol Spence a rematch.

“Bout to shock the world (168). Then I’m coming back to hold my throne down (154). I’m the king. Nothing will stop me. Mega fights here on out. After my boy rematch we can give the people what they want and make the BudCrawford happen!”

You will notice that there is no word of Tim Tszyu in Charlo’s grand plans. Tszyu was of course supposed to have fought Charlo some months back, with two dates called off due to Charlo’s injury, with Tszyu being the WBO mandatory for some time now (hence the stripping procedure the WBO will undertake as soon as Charlo sets foot into the ring with Canelo). Tszyu will be left out in the cold as far as Charlo is concerned.

But can Charlo do as he says, and defeat Canelo and then fight Crawford? Some people will tell you Canelo, who recently turned 33, is sufficiently past his best to be taken and that Charlo, despite having to go up two weight divisions, is the man to do it. Maybe. Crawford, meanwhile, has said he is very much interested in a fight with Charlo, “Bud” wishing to conquer yet another weight division.

It could indeed be super fights next for Charlo, two of them, back-to-back. IF he can get that massive win in his first super fight, that is.

Who are YOU picking: Canelo or Charlo? And if Charlo does fight Crawford, can he pull off the upset there?

I wouldn't believe it just because he said it..all politics talk. Can Charlo at that age go up so far in weight then drain straight back down to 54?

Queue the excuses. He'll be weight drained of course

Believe it or not, but let's not start the Charlo is ducking Bud talk! The man has shown zero signs of fear, and he's now going up 2 WEIGHT CLASSES to fight one of the best of this generation! That hardly EVER happens!

If they're smart, they won't try to add weight. They just won't bother boiling him down all the way. That way he won't be slower, and he can fight as usual. Then he can just do his usual to fight Crawford.

I suspect he probably will come back to 154. This isn't Jermall after all, and in any case, the Crawford fight is the most lucrative fight for him after the Canelo cash cow. The question for me is if Spence will trigger the rematch, and if Charlo will defend against Tszyu in the interim.

I'm also going to say on topic, this right here is why Inoue's win is so significant. He went up and beat the consensus #1 in his debut in the weight class. He didn't take years to acclimate. It's harder to fight at a new weight class for the first time, and Fulton is still in his prime. Even Bomac acknowledges that it would have been way harder if Crawford had gotten his shot earlier. I would be curious to know how many champs took out the top guy in their divisional debut.

I agree charlo isn't ducking anyone, hardly considering he's moving up 2 divisions to face canelo. Daring to be great all credit to him. Its the fans excuses I allude to. Too much tribalism!

Persinally i hope errol takes an early retirement. Yes i know he talks funny and has a lazy eye but he'd be high on the list for cte. I pray he values his life over the ring. The signs are there he'll be the last one to see it don't want him talking like James toney in 5 years

BX, Charlo said in the bold, “after my boy rematch we can give the people what they want”. That means he’s wanting Errol to try again, instead of himself, in my opinion.
Now as far as it goes with Tim, Charlo effed up big time! Tim has been getting in better work and looking good!
Who do I have between Charlo and Canelo? I think it comes down to Canelo’s performance more than Charlo’s. If Canelo looks fresher than he did against Ryder, has his D back on point, he will trouble Charlo IF he can corner him. I think straight up, Charlo boxes his ears off from the center. Question is, can Charlo take Nelo’s power! Canelo has some thump now. Charlo just has the speed advantage, which he better use to his fullest.
Win or lose, if Charlo comes back to 54, I think Crawford will whip his a$$ in my opinion. I don’t think that Charlo has any true advantages over Crawford’s ring IQ. The better fight may be Tim Tsyzu vs Terence Crawford!!! What are your thoughts on that? Tim is looking like he might have to move to middleweight soon

For the past week, I've been saying that Boots should fight Tszyu ASAP! I think Crawford schools Tszyu with ease!

Are you blaming Charlo, for Spence wanting a rematch? I hope not!

I don't think spence has the depth of skills to avoid punishment at 154. I'd like to see boots vs spence but it's never happening. Boots needs a few marquee names on his resume it's his time to shine.
and I dont agree that he can't hang with bud. If anything he's faster twitch, has all the tools but perhaps buds experience and ability to adapt mid fight would squeak out the win. I see it ahighly competitive fight
