Comments Thread For: Ryan Garcia Chooses New Trainer: "Thank you Derrick James and Errol Spence Jr. For Allowing Me To Join The Team"

Ryan Garcia stood alone during his post-fight presser following his defeat against Gervonta Davis. Seemingly apoplectic and in stunned disbelief that Davis was the better man, the 24-year-old vowed to not only return a better fighter but to also make sweeping changes.

Good trainer but you gotta be willing to listen and learn. Ryan's too arrogant. I'll believe he makes changes when I see them in the ring.

Yoooo that's a choice I would have never guessed.

I fxck with Ryan now. He's on the winning team.

No but for real. Derrick James is a solid coach. I'm not sure how Ryan fits into that camp's style of fighters. Charlos don't fight too different than Spence. Ryan fights very different than all of them but if anyone can fix up Ryan it would be Derrick. That's a coach that knows boxing. Makes things real simple for his guys.

May God love him! This kid really does have mental health issues. Poor thing! Derrick James is not going to help improve his defense. He is an offensive oriented trainer. He won't be able to teach him how to grow or protect that chin of his.

You haven't got to be a defensive genius to improve THAT defense. I'm certain what ever Derrick teaches him will be better than what he has. The question is whether or not Ryan is teachable.

jermell is the undisputed champ at 154 and Errol has 3 belts at 147. They didn’t accomplish this by having no defense. Obviously James is teaching them something.

also, Not sure where “Ryan has bad defense” came from. Yes, he got clocked by Campbell and KOd by Tank, but Campbell was more of a lapse of concentration. Is not like Campbell was teeing off on him. Tank was just much better in every aspect and Ryan got impatient. Other than tank, no one has put multiple shots together.

It would be a good move if Garcia was a commited fighter, but he can still be in some fun fights (as long as the opponents are similarly limited and around his level).
