Alvarez just doesn’t have the endurance of Bivol. Bivol is ultra-high energy, and he stays bouncy and springy for the entire 36 minutes. He showed the recipe for defeating Alvarez (who is a phenomenal talent despite the clenbuterol). To beat Canelo, you need marathon stamina, flashing in and out, side to side, fast jab, throw in the occasional 10-strike combination. And then, if you can take the punches Canelo throws, you can outpoint him and wear him to a weary frazzle.

That formula worked so well that Bivol will do it again. I don’t think Alvarez has the genetics for that kind of stamina. It’s something a guy is born with, or not. And to quote Sam Mossabini, even the best coach “can’t put in what God left out.”

I’m no boxing expert, but from where I sit, it looks like Alvarez-Bivol 2 will probably go much like the first one did.

Canelo just expects at this point in his career that he can beat up people's arms in fights, then after about 8-9 rounds knock them out once they can no longer lift their arms to defend themselves. Canelo's power hasn't carried over in these higher divisions like he thought. Now guys can stand in front of him and fight him because they can take his shots. If Canelo doesn't learn to move more, throw more punches and box more like he used to then he will lose to Bivol again.

In Canelo's earlier fights he was more active, mobile and threw more punches, now he likes to sit in the pocket more and trade with guys. This is a recipe for disaster when he fights mobile boxers like Bivol.
How early in his career are you talking about? And no, Canelo wouldn't make 160 again if he wanted to. It would be way too difficult to drop back down again, after not having fought there in 4 years.

People said after Saunders fight that he's only 30 and entering his prime. Looks like that prime lasted only for Plant fight

This is the illusion created by the hype. Every time Canelo fights middling comp, he looks good and he is crowned as a monster. Every time he fights a really good fighter and looks ok but not great, yet wins on the cards....even when he lost or drew.....he gets a pass and anyone who criticizes him is called a hater.

He really got on his own hype train and started the eye rolling "I am chasing greatness" stuff, and after he stopped the "Im here for a paycheck taking a nap" sleepy faded Kovalev, he got bold and thought Bivol would be a walkover, and he caught a good old fashioned ass whipping. Then all of the "dont be a hater" stuff started with Canelo fanboys.

Just a bunch of hype, for a fighter who is very good, but not great.

I don’t know Canelo’s real reasons for wanting the Bivol rematch. Does he really want at 175 because he wants the same terms of the first fight to make a victory sweeter or is he avoiding the possibility that Bivol could snatch his belts at 168? Also, I feel like if Canelo thinks there’s a possibility that he loses to Bivol in a rematch, he might prefer losing by decision with less damage than potentially getting hurt and stopped by Benavidez.

I don't think Canelo is physically past his prime, and I don't think he has too many miles. I think somewhere after his move to SMW he fell in love with his power a bit too much, and began to lean on it more than he should have.

The best version of Canelo was great head movement and slick counters to the body. He got away from that when he started getting a bunch of KOs lined up. If he can get back to what made him great, he can get a win. The question is, is that Canelo still around?

Surprised Carl never said “I would’ve backed him up to the ropes and smashed him to bits.”

I agree with your analysis. Canelo is a very good fighter but not great. He got exposed more when he thought Bivol would be an easy fight only to realize that this guy can actually fight and fight well. I want to see him fight an even opponent where he has to gut out a win. If he did this against David Benavidez then he will become a great fighter. Until then he is a very good fighter.

The build up to froch vs canelo would have been hilarious, good action fight as well.
