At the end of the day, everyone agrees that in normal circumstances you become the lineal champion by beating the man who beat the man. Everyone agrees that the belts have become meaningless because there are too many of them, their rankings have nothing to do with who the best fighters are, and they strip people for bull**** reasons. The only area of disagreement is what happens when there is a vacancy, e.g. due to retirement. The Ring's rule, which almost all boxing experts and knowledgeable fans accept, is that if there is a vacancy, the only way to crown a new champion is for the top 2 rated fighters in the division to fight each other. In truly exceptional circumstances, when it is impossible for the #1 and #2 contenders to fight each other, as is the case with the Klitschko brothers, a new champion can be crowned when the #1 and #3 contenders face each other. That's why Wlad was generally accepted as the new lineal Heavyweight champion when he beat Chagaev.

Winning all the belts is simply impossible nowadays. Fighters inevitably get stripped of at least one before they can unify them all. And a lot of the belt holders have no credibility in any case. For instance, no one would seriously claim that anyone needs to fight Vyacheslav Senchenko in order to be the lineal Welterweight champion, because no one credible ranks him anywhere near the top 10 Welterweights, never mind ranking him at #2, and yet he's got the WBA belt. That just shows how ridiculous and meaningless the belts have become.

Of course we want to see him fight Mosley...but do you not think that it would be natural to fight the winner of Pacman vs Cotto first? Mosley already has Berto lined up anyways.

The "best" would be the winner of the Cotto v Pac fight. Pac is p4p #1 and Cotto already beat Mosley.

1) Mosley is available now, Cotto and Pac are not.

2) Mosley is universally ranked #1 at Welterweight, not Cotto, and not Pac.

3) Beating Mosley would make Mayweather the lineal and Ring Welterweight champion. Beating the Pac/Cotto winner would not.

4) He would make far more money if he fights Mosley first for the Ring and lineal title and then the Pac/Cotto winner for all the marbles. That fight for all the marbles would then become the biggest fights since Leonard-Hearns

But in any case, you're creating a false either/or. Unless he fights both the Pac/Cotto winner and Mosley, he'll have zero respect from anyone who is not a nuthugger. Zero.

What he said above. Mosley can fight now and generate even more buzz for the winner of cotto vs pac. Floyd fans just make excuses for their guy because if any other fighter did what Floyd does and gets away wit they would be all over him.

P4P is not a weight class. Pac is not ranked at Welterweight. Cotto lost after he narrowly beat Mosley, while Mosley has been rejuvenated since then, is coming off one of the best wins of his career, and is now ranked higher than Cotto by every single independent ranking organisation, bar none, including The Ring and boxrec.

In any case, which of them is ranked higher is a pointless argument. Unless Mayweather fights both the Cotto/Pac winner and Mosley, he'll have zero respect from anyone who is not a nuthugger.
