He's mandatory because Canelo lobbied for him to be mandatory so he can have yet another gimme fight. Canelo has zero interest in fighting the Beterbievs and Benavidez or the world. He's good with the cherry picking (gone wrong in the case of Bivol.) John Ryder wouldn't be in the ring if he was any kind of a challenge. He's there because Canelo put him there. Not because he's any kind of a decent fighter. He sucks period.

Don’t be silly. Ryder has been at the top of the SMW division for a few years now and he showed he is capable enough fighter with his performance against Smith. Benavidez would have already fought Canelo but he showed how unprofessional he is and missed out, if he has anything about him why doesn’t he fight Bivol or Smith or Beterbiev. Why should Canelo fight any LHW anyway? He’s the undisputed SMW champion of the world and clearly that is his weight.

Ryder deserves this shot as much as any other smw. Andrade would have been more entertaining leading up to the fight, but no more competitive. I'd be much more apt to pay for this fight if it were vs Andrade(still wouldn't unless I was drunk). Reality is that Alvarez has no competition at SMW. If rather see Alvarez go back to middleweight weight where he was a more dynamic fighter

Seems like you’re really sipping the kool aid. Canelo has made it clear that the way to fight him is to become a bigger name? Lmaooooo. Aside from ggg, who are these big names canelo has been facing? Let’s be real, nobody he has fought at 168 has a stellar resume. His entire undisputed run in that division was against 4 guys (smith, Yidilgrim, Saunders and plant)who combined only defeated 3 current/former champions. What’s the biggest win between the 4 of them? Smith beating a 36 yr old groves or Saunders beating Andy Lee? Yeah, those were truly elite wins. Canelo picks fighters primarily based on determining what kind of risk they pose. The less stylistic risk you pose, the more likely you are to land the fight. And that’s exactly why his resume is littered with a bunch of Brits and exactly why Ryder is on deck. Stop trying to dress up shet and pass it off as gold.

by caliber are you talking about popularity or level of danger they pose to Canelo? Either way, I think the 3 you mentioned are both more popular and stylistically greater threats to Canelo than his run of opposition at 168. B
