How big would Oscar have been in this social media era?

Some people may not know or might have been too young when Oscar was a bona-fide superstar. He had the boxing skill and looks, he was appearing on main stream commercials before he even went pro shortly after his Gold medal win. He was a darling of the media, all of Hollywood loved him. I remember seeing actor's who weren't even boxing fans at fights. Guys like Paulie shore, Brad Pitt, Tom cruise etc would all come out to see Oscar fight. And ofcourse the huge female fan base that he had aswell.

Wonder how much more bigger Oscar would have been in today's social media era.

Oscar is the third biggest boxing star ever IMO. He lost the vast majority of his biggest fights yet still remained the biggest star in the sport.

    1. Ali.
    2. Tyson.
    3. Oscar.

      I agree with that 100%.

Also he Was the first boxer to overtake the HW'S when it came to purses and star level. He really did open up the door for the guys who followed like Floyd, Manny and Canelo who were also payed higher than HWs.

He somewhat was. I’m pretty sure Leonard was generally earning more than Holmes in the 80’s for example. Regardless though, Oscar was a mega star. You could make a cohesive argument he made Mayweather, Pacquiao and Canelo into superstars, they all benefited massively from their association with Oscar.

You're right he fought two of them and associated with the other.

I always assumed Holmes was making more than Leonard but not sure have to look into that one.

Leonard earned crazy money for the era. $10m for Duran, $12m for Hearns, $12m for Hagler. Similar to Oscar he was a mainstream star before turning pro due to the Olympics and his marketability.

Holmes earned about $10m for Cooney I believe but generally he was underpaid compared to other HW champions. He only got 500k for beating Norton for example.

Between the coke use, the sex with the underage girl, the out of wedlock kid he denied, his bi sexual lifestyle and the weird fetishes, hed be a complete outcast because his carefully cultivated image wouldve been destroyed.

Fishnets wouldve been outed and canceled as soon as he took the rolling pin out of his ass and took off the high heels.

You dont think Floyd has surpassed ODH?

Even adjusted for the time period ODH biggest fight was Floyd. Meanwhile, he’s Floyd’s 4th biggest fight.

You sure ODH was more popular than Leonard?

Definitely not. One loss would have destroyed Floyd’s USP. After 4/5 losses Oscar was still selling millions. On top of that, I’m not sure Mayweather ever becomes as big as he was without fighting Oscar.

I was debating him with SRL for 3rd place, both had very similar rises to stardom but again if SRL loses to Hearns, Duran and Hagler does he remain the top star in the sport? Oscar had a wider fanbase too IMO.

Ali, Mike and Oscar were the only 3 superstar fighters I felt it didn’t really matter whether they won or lost in regards to their star power.

I think with everything you stated , he would of been larger than life
People would call him a *** while checking his Instagram
The ***** would have him on a pedestal
I can see his face on milk boxes , cereals and all over the gay community
Call it what you will but imo that would put him over the top
