Nah, Oscar not bigger than Joe Louis
Joe Louis had the entire nation including the President of the United States calling him to beat Max Schmelling
Hell, the whole world was rooting for him to beat Hitler & The ****s
He was a war hero, America's first Black superstar, and the heavyweight champ for 12 years when there was only 1 champion
By far the biggest star in all of sports for the entirety of the 1940s.
He's like if you crossed Michael Jordan with what The Klitschkos are doing in Ukraine right now.
And Sugar Ray Leonard's gotta get some consideration too.
He was making the equivalent of $30 million back when the HW champ (Holmes) was making peanuts in comparison
Yeah, but more people were watching boxing in the '90s than in the 2010s when Floyd was at his peak celebrity.
When Oscar was fighting, athletes were legit celebrities.
I think it's close though.
Oscar was the biggest star when boxing was still a top 4 or 5 sport in America
Floyd was the biggest star when boxing was more of a niche sport and he was the only real star in it.
I guess they're about even.
That to me indicates his star power is massive.
Floyd took off when hip hop became the top form of music in America. He also used social media better than any other boxer.
Coka definitely was bigger outside the urban communities.Comment

It’s close for sure. I’ve already been over it several times in this thread as to why I believe Oscar is number 3 and I don’t really wanna go down that rabbit hole again tbh.
For reference though, SRL was a very close 4th and I think there’s a definite argument to put him 3rd.Comment

Floyd is as big a celebrity as there is. Agree that ODH was a huge star when boxing was bigger, but Floyd was the athlete that earned the most a couple of years despite boxing not occupying the same space.
That to me indicates his star power is massive.

I disagree with Floyd being as big a celebrity as there is.
He has no endorsements, so grandmothers may not know who they are unless they're Black & have sons/grandsons talking about boxing.
Floyd's not as big of a celebrity as say LeBron or Tom Brady in this country.
Hip-Hop's been dominating since the '90s. That's no new thing
Eminem, 2pac, Snoop, and Biggie and Jay Z are all the most famous rappers ever. They're all '90s rappers
Social media is still a niche world. There's still lots of people in their 60s, 70s, and 80s who don't have social media.
Floyd's super famous to young people, Black people, and people who are sports fans.
In the past, it was easier to be famous to everybody because everybody watched the same channels.
