If any of these frequently changing news stories hold any merit, today (at least), it looks like WBC and World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs) will be fighting his old pal Derek Chisora (33-12, 23 KOs; BoxRec #9, ) for a 3rd time (!!!) on December 3rd at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. It seems like the two fighters are the only two people who are excited about this match-up. Chisora is the ultimate gatekeeper / fringe contender and his hard fought win over the aging Kubrat Pulev may be the best win of his career. But this fight is an example of "Been there, Done that" as Fury has beaten Del Boy decisively twice.
Now, when questioned why a coveted title shot was being granted to Belgian Jean-Pierre Coopman "The Lion of Flanders" 24-3-0 (14) in February 1976, Muhammad Ali once famously said "Well, you can't fight Joe Frazier every four months". Coopman was an honest professional and national champion of a nation with a long boxing history, but was said to have been one of the least-deserving boxers to ever fight for the heavyweight title. Ali had recently had his third fight with Joe Frazier, the "Thrilla in Manila", a match Ali later called, "the closest thing to death", so his thoughts about Coopman were certainly on the mark. Tyson Fury, following his own epic trilogy of brutal fights against co-champion Deontay Wilder that saw him visit the floor no fewer than four times, can certainly make the same claim. Like Ali, he's earned it, regardless of what the civilian fans think.
But why Chisora?????
For a stay-sharp fight against a live opponent while waiting for the big ones again Usyk and Joshua that we actually WANT & DESERVE to see, who would YOU want Fury to go on tour against???
I'll pick my three candidates for a shot, and ya'll give yours if you feel like it:
1. Zhilei Zhang in Hong Kong, China. (World Historic)
2. Daniel Dubois in London, England. (Younger Star)
3. Martin Bakole in Kinshasa, The Congo (Global)
Any thoughts???
