At least HBO used common sense and had frugal minimums with PPV upside. With Golovkin the contract was even worse...
Yeah it's amazing isn't it? Who is money laundering their money with DAZN? It has the be the worst return on investment.

I'm sure DAZN would rather turn a profit, but most companies disrupting industries don't do that for a few years. If they're growing, they're probably doing ok. Ask Uber, Amazon...
DAZN is more akin to Peleton than Amazon.

Even if the other countries don't have PPV they have to pay the televised rights for the fight. I don't think that was a terrible sale but if they were expecting 1 million buys they were delusional. GGG was selected because he is a star more than the other fighters. One thing with this fight a lot of casuals were asking me about it so it did generate that interest but it didn't materialize with the sales.

Losing billions though? That feels more like fiscal incompetence rather than a loss leading strategy.

DAZN would definitely be running a loss leading strategy. Remember that even with PPVs, it's still a subscriber model. They deliberately made the PPV enticing to subscribe rather than just pay the higher PPV price. How many of them hang around and pay another month, and another? If they're anything like me, they'll just let it run.

Billions is a lot. But to the owner... it's just billions of investment in something he thinks can be profitable, or valuable, or maybe even acquired by one of the big TV companies. He's got the money to make the gamble.

But as a boxing fan, I just think it's good someone is trying to disrupt the way things have gone in the sport. I hope their vision is still that with a large enough subscriber base across the world that they won't need to do any (or many) PPV to make fights. PPV has hidden boxing.

The fight only did 550-575k buys per Dan Rafael, that’s less than 50m in PPV revenue.

I imagine the gate was around 20m again but that still leaves you way short of the money you needed to recoup.

Based on what they paid the fight would have needed to do similar numbers to the 2nd fight for DAZN to merely break even. That fight was on HBO and both fighters were close to their peaks. Did they really think they were going to do the same numbers as HBO on a f***ing app with a 40 year old Golovkin and Canelo coming off a loss?

DAZN need to start firing some of these clowns or they’re gonna run the business into the ground. They’re doing it already tbh. Game changed will soon become game over the way it’s going.
Thought it was an international PPV doing 1,060,000?
I see your point completely. They did however state that DAZN was the most bought App of the weekend, and this source has nothing to do with the fight scene.
What I saw for purses were Red got 45Mill - G got 20Mill.

They’re losing crazy amounts of money, that’s not loss leading it’s just unnecessary losses. Blatvanik had to inject 4.3 billion back into the company as part of a recapitalisation strategy. That’s cause they needed to clear debts. They’re in dangerous territory and this Canelo-GGG financial disaster hopefully prompts them to make some serious changes.

I don’t see many sticking around, say you’re a casual fan who wants to see Canelo fight, you aren’t gonna see him until next May? Why would you continue your subscription? Boxing is far too niche of a sport to guarantee you a consistent subscriber base. Boxing relies on casual fans who tune in and out when the big name fighters fight. Guys like us stick around to watch Hughes-Galahad or Gill-Martinez but the casual fan doesn’t. They won’t even know those fights are happening.

The international market ain’t worth a carrot, as Rafael said they’ll be worth a fraction of the domestic buys. DAZN are just window dressing with the international buys.

They were the guarantees right? I’m pretty sure they were set to make $65 and $43 respectively.

DAZN sold totally 1,06m PPV. That's mean +460k PPV in addition to "zero point" 600k PPV. So, their profit are between $29m-$39m. Also, Canelo and Golovkin made "guaranteed" $65m. Haters can fuck themselves.
