Wilder working on his left hook

Fcking around on the heavy bag this morning and it clarified for me how to say what I mean. It isn't about he thumb, it's about physics and the elbow and forearm. When Wilder hit Fury with that hook his elbow wasn't traveling directly behind his fist, his forearm wasn't perpendicular to the target and most of the force was lost when Wilders fist bounced off Fury's big head.
My guy, it was a falling target, the angle of the hook was perfect.

He didn't turn it over, this is the point of contact and his thumb is clearly pointing up.

So what if he's throwing multiple hooks, he throws his hook thumbs up. Did you watch the entire video?? Do you even know who Roy Jones Jr is, have you ever seen him fight???
Here we go again and isn't it funny Roy is showing the same combo I said would be great for Wilder (right hand - left hook - right hand {optional: bob left - weave right at the end}), the stars are lining up today!
What he had Wilder doing is junk, I know a junk trainer when I see one.
Respond if you want, I'm not going any further on this.
Ward threw two hooks, the first with his elbow down, not following directly behind the fist. The next hook he turned his arm over, bringing the elbow up and his forearm perpendicular to his opponents head like a spear. The thumb position wasn't really critical to the transfer of power, it was the angle of his forearm being aligned with the direction his fist was traveling.
Thumb up or flat, if Wilder can get his elbow behind his fist, that's an improvement.Last edited by 4truth; 08-25-2022, 11:30 AM.Comment

Well, I'm glad you're out there working on your left hook! Best punch to throw on any occasion in any location.

Although, it is about the thumb and the ° of the elbow doesn't matter as much. Case in point =--->

Your elbow can be in any area of the red in this diagram I made, it's a big spectrum which is why the left hook is such a complex punch, there are a lot of angles there. Ultimately, it's about snap because the angle isn't so much the issue. If you can snap your left hook, the rest is easy.

If you want to perfect your left hook, do three rounds shadowboxing with 5lb handweights and definitely do thumbs down on those. Routine is 10 straight punches (each side), 10 hooks (each side), 10 uppercuts (each side), push the weight and snap it back into position, repeat for 3 minutes and do 3 rounds with 1 minute rests. Make sure you do this with your hand wraps on, as soon as that last round is over, go right into some gloves and test your hook out on the heavybag with thumbs up. Don't follow through so much with the hook, snap it back to guard and into a bob/weave, but definitely give it some heat. Tell me how it feels.
Oh yea, Ward had to move the angle because his opponents arm was in the way.
