It's just "bad" matchmaking. He could have still been flying high - tricky lefty... It's like Kambosos taking on Haney. He has more chance of winning the lottery than winning that fight. Still Joshua fought very well and should continue is career and just chalk this as another learning experience.

Joshua would have needed to duck Usyk and drop a belt. That's not a good look. Nor is it what Joshua is about (let's at least give him that much credit).

As for Kambosos, I think it's great he fought Haney. Backed himself in and made the fight the division needed to get rid of that Franchise nonsense the WBC created.

AJ was lucky that Vitali was retired for good, back then, otherwise that would have been his first destruction.

In Parker fight, P was basically not allowed to fight his way by the continuous stoppages. Ruiz II was too fat to catch a jump'n'running girl. Otherwise he would have won easily.

I always stated AJ is overrated. Always. He would not stand a chance against most (all?) of the division's all time greats.

A good athlet gifted with an incredibile body. Not with boxing iq nor high level technique.

He was lucky, he robbed the Olympic gold to cammarelle, he was always protected.

Guess what - a lot of basketball players are world class but not as good as M Jordan. Doesn't mean they are ****. In fact they can be incredibly good. It's just that Jordan is better. Generational talents are like that. The freakish talent of a Mayweather or a Pacman doesn't make everyone else rubbish.

He was a very big Anthony Joshua. Being a professional writer and starting an article with a flawed sentence is not a good look.

That being said, I disagree with almost everything in the article. I think AJ did well in both fights with a style that is very hard for you. I wanna see him against all top dogs still, he is a good fighter and an entertaining one too. He has a good chance of beating all other HWs on the planet. And with a better gameplan he could win against Usyk too. This time the tactic wasn't successful and first time around his corner was completely useless.

Usyk is just a phenomenon. If he had some real pop in his hands he would be a potential GOAT. If he beats Fury then the case can be made he is an ATG. Hoping the undisputed can be made. Joshua can rebuild and challenge the winner.

After this performance I don't think anyone thinks AJ is an easy fight.

For anyone that can’t be arsed to read this, Fitzsimmons thinks AJ went all wrong after Ruiz, and he should have beat Usyk because he’s bigger.


Ofc, if Lyle Fitzsimmons knew anything about boxing, he would know:

(1) that AJ’s problems were and have been stylistic in nature, with the Wlad KD prompting McCracken to try to “fix” his flaws, and led to tactical uncertainty that was apparent as soon as the Takam fight

(2) that Usyk is actually a real technician, and should never have been the underdog, even for the first fight

(3) just pounding people with your size doesn’t work in boxing, especially when up against a real technician

Good points regarding AJ, I take issue with Lyle (amongst many others) deeming usyk a brown up cruiserweight, for one he is taller and heavier than both Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield when they fought, and more importantly he is a special talent.

Do feel a bit embarrassed for lyle as a boxing writer for him to say "I’m not entirely sure where things began to go sideways for AJ" Let someone who does write an article about him then!

usyk has great boxing skill but No heavyweight power can’t drop any top 20 heavyweights , yet Anthony juchua were so tentative fragile in both fights , landing a clean shot in the low belt area but only wooed usyk majidov in wsb landed in the same area and dropped usyk, whether it’s steroids or mind sets this Joshua can’t knockout any top 10 heavyweights out anymore, and more likely to get knocked out, unless he change up.
