He “fights” really, really scared. And I think that’s because at this point he knows his chin isn’t very strong. He fought Kambosos so scared, he didn’t really let Kambosos get off a good amount of punches and they still landed the same amount of punches (68 vs 69). This means that Haney was so fixated and not allowing Kambosos to throw anything meaningful (by holding, hugging, grabbing) that he himself barely landed anything meaningful (27%).
Those are really bad numbers. And when you watch the fight you realize what happened. He fought scared. No one who gets in the ring for a living, to fight, is a coward. But my god that was an awfully scared performance there.
What would have been the worst that would happen if Haney opened up more and actually put together some good combinations against Kambosos? “Oh no, he might hit me!”. It’s boxing, you’re going to get hit eventually. But my god, are you really going to fight so scared that you refuse to throw anything of substance yourself?
I don’t care what anyone says. Haney is a terrible “fighter”. He really isn’t going to last when he steps up to a puncher with some good skill and speed. He will eventually fight some guys that are better and stronger than Linares and Kambosos and what is he going to do then, just cower up in a little ball in the corner of the ring just to not engage with them? Like what’s he going to do if he fights Tank, Lomachenko, or Ryan? Or Lopez at 140?
