It means that you're a moldy Fetus McMuffin sitting an ******** clinic dumpster.

Added weight can benefit you in mass but it can also hurt you in explosiveness, especially if it's a weight your not used to operating at. It also matters how that mass was added.

Fortuna's weight is a red flag to me because it's indicative of poor preparation. In the broadcast, Mannix mentioned that the bout was at 140 because Fortuna couldn't make lightweight. I don't recall him ever fighting that heavy before and he rehydrated to 157. Fortuna didn't look good to me, either in appearance or his performance.

Garcia did look good but I don't think he had the best version of Fortuna in front of him either.

That's actually a good point. You can lose explosiveness. I guess I should have said power operates on a bell curve, where at some point, the excessive weight has diminishing returns. Yeah. Fortuna is more of a 130 pound guy. That's where he fought at most of his career. But I've seen guys rehydrate to the 150 pound range before, while fighting at lightweight. Linares rehydrated to 152 while at lightweight. Haney rehydrates to about 157. So I suppose it's possible that Fortuna wasn't at his best going into the ring. He must have let himself go since last he fought, if he couldn't make the weight.

      Anyway, good point.

To your point, Gatti was another who seemed to rehydrate a great deal and still retained his explosiveness and power. The night of the Gamache fight, Gatti weighed in close to 160 for a fight at junior welterweight.

If you cared to actually watch him fight he actually has a very good, powerful straight right that he caught and hurt Campbell and Fortuna with and he's a pretty good boxer lol. Because of his staure, speed, power and explosiveness its pretty easy for him to set traps that both Campbell and Fortuna fell for ending thier nights. Tank couldn't even walk down a small ass Cruz or that special needs kid Rollie...but hes going to walk down the biggest, fastest and biggest puncher at 135-140lb in Ryan?? Keep dreaming dude. He may time and catch Ryan in an exchange but he ain't walking down shiet dude.

That's a great example. He ruined Gamache in that fight. It's hard to tell who benefits from the weight gain and who's harmed. As I'm sure you know, mass x velocity = Force. And within that simple equation, force is qualified by "area of effect." This means the smaller the surface area that delivers said force, the greater the force will be. This is one of the big reasons why sparring gloves weighing 16oz don't destroy your sparring partners, because the surface area is larger and more well padded than fight gloves. And a puncher's glove, that padding gives way so the knuckle can pierce (proper technique) and concentrate that force onto a small area (despite fight gloves prolonging contact time to enable penetration, which reduces the force the delivered to a certain degree). You also want that strike to be perpendicular to maximize that force.

Anyway, I'm rambling here, but someone who's mass increases while retaining the same level of velocity should have significantly greater force when strike an opponent. This is why I'm unsure whether saying that because Fortuna was overweight (relatively), he was a weaker opponent. For all we know, Fortuna could be hitting harder than he ever has before, provided that the extra mass is not slowing him down. It's impossible to say whether it did or didn't without measuring his kinetic force before and after. But it's reasonable to assume that Fortuna was still formidable. And like that Gatti vs Gamache fight, we saw what happens when someone comes into the ring with significantly more mass. Professional fighters can optimize force generation better than anyone, and the best at doing so with punches are boxers. An untrained person might benefit from the added mass but not nearly as much as a professional boxer.

I suppose the point I'm making here is that I've been seeing people doing what they can to attack Garcia, and it's become a "thing" to do so, usually by boxing fans who are from previous generations, who don't understand social media and how it's changed societal interactions. I imagine part of his mental breakdown was due to the constant attacks on social media.

Just my thoughts on the matter ....

Nah,that fight needs to happen next. NEITHER of them are fighting the best fighters at 135 or 140
