Just got word that Andy Cruz, who won Olympic gold at Tokyo in 2021 in the lightweight division, has left the Cuban boxing team and has apparently defected. Cruz, 26, has also won three world championships and two Pan American championships. He has never placed less than first in any international competition. No word yet on his whereabouts, but he is supposedly off the island. An announcement is said to be coming soon.

Andy Cruz is a great addition to the lightweight or jr. welterweight classes. Cruz slippery footwork vs. Keyshawn Davis in the third round at Ekaterinburg ( 2019 ) had me laughing and made Davis look his age.Comment

Great, another immigrant coming to leech off the system. As a Trump supporter I can’t and will not support this. Especially the way gas prices are today.Comment

Lol At least you can be pretty sure he won’t be pulling heists on the streets or dealing drugs. Lol As for gas prices, I don’t see the link to immigration — legal or otherwise.Comment

Cruz is super-slick and sports some very flashy footwork. No doubt he’s a serious talent, but I don’t know how well he’ll adjust to the pros. He has that “fencing with gloves” style. Time will tell.Comment

I wonder if he's going to have Ismael Salas train him. What's up with that guys shoes anyway? Are these popular in downtown Havana?

Ah ok that could be it. First time I noticed it was when he trained David Haye years back. Just looked very odd to me thought it might have been a culture thing. The guy is Rigo's height so yeah it makes sense.
