He could have finished it just like the 5th round on the Tarver 3 fight. He had him hurt but chose to back off of him, Im confident if Calzaghe gave a rematch that Jones would knock him out.
    LOL.

Roy Jones ended round 1 backing up.

There is no silver lining in this fight. Roy Jones at this point could never beat Calzaghe. He was fairly live but aside from a flukey knockdown and one uppercut, he was well out of his depth and lost big.

Joe Calzaghe is not Sheika, or Lacy. As proved when he smashed both of them.

    • I agree with alot of posts on this topic, prime vs prime Calzaghe seems to be the one who would be favored to win. He has one of those rare styles that would always give Roy problems. Roy was not a poor sport even after he lost, I don't remember him making any excuses at all other then the fact that his eye was cut and bothering him alot. He wasn't a poor sport meaning, he didn't say **** like Calzaghe is a fraud and sucks.

      • Prime Jones beats this guy. Roy was faster and had more power. Some of the saddest stuff in that fight were the moments where Jones was too slow to hit Joe. Maybe the fastest P4P fighter to ever put on gloves too slow to catch a guy? Terrible. When Jones finally admits this during the fight in the corner, it was one of the saddest things I've seen in sports.

You mean the part where Calzaghe didn't stay still like a stiff board and allow Roy to left hook him to death?

No. When Roy realized he couldn't leap in and take this guy's head off like if he were young. His legs were gone and he actually admitted it.

Are you going to sit here and tell us that stylistically Calzaghe would never give prime Roy a problem. Calzaghe isn't that slow, throws over 1,000 punches, fights in odd ass angles. Has a pretty good jab when he uses it.

              • Calzaghe is/was mint. But then so was Roy.

Prime vs Prime I'd say this fight is sooooo close. I'd give it an extremely close 51/49 to Roy purely based on the fact he achieved more over his career but assessing them with my eyes....**** me I cannot decide!

That first round that you saw would've been 5x worse in Roy's prime, forearm or not, and he didn't have this deathly fear of being hit like he does now.

You clearly havent watched much RJJ. He has had a deathly fear of being hit going all the way back to his amateur days. Jones never KO'ed an even competant fighter and Joe wouldnt have backed down and would have outworked Jones.

I don't think there was any window of opportunity to knock Joe out in that first round, nor against Hopkins. As old and wiley and ring-hardened as the both were they would have went for it. Like you said Roy clammed up when he started getting hit, pretty much immediately.

Joe recovers fast, he was knocked down hard by Kabrary Salem, lol. He has great chin but he was always susceptible to knockdowns.

Byron Mitchell is the only guy who had Joe in trouble, if that was a Hopkins or a Jones that night Joe would have been KO'd. Joe's eyes were glassy. But Mitchell got caught by a Joe who could still punch and stopped. Kessler nailed Joe with a few big uppercuts too. Roy hit Joe with an awesome uppercut, Nard barely hit Calzaghe all night, nobody hit anybody in that stinker.
