The ethic that winning is the only thing is exactly what’s wrong with pro sports everywhere, not just boxing. It explains Lance Armstrong, now universally disgraced. GGG says it explains Alvarez and clenbuterol -- twice - - to the raging fury of Canelo. GGG seems earnestly dedicated to the idea that the clean fighter can beat the dirty one, and in my opinion, he can rightly claim to have done it at least once, maybe twice.
I really hope the fight with GGG doesn’t happen. There’s bad blood there of the sort that doesn’t do the sport any favors. And as a long time observer of GGG’s career, I hate to see an older fighter contend with a much younger one when that su****ious meat may legitimately be the difference between a final win and final loss.
Moreover, the Bivol fight proves that GGG would still have to clearly beat Canelo by a whopping margin just to achieve a close decision. The Bank of Canelo is exceedingly difficult to overcome, especially in Las Vegas. Bivol showed it’s possible, but the GGG who’s been trying to feint and weave definitely can’t do it.
Can GGG stalk Alvarez into a corner and break his ribs like Macklin? I like Golovkin, but I really don’t think he can do that.
