Comments Thread For: Michael Conlan Calls For Rematch With Leigh Wood Following Frightening 12th-Round TKO Loss

No need for a rematch. Wood put it on Conlan in the first round. It was clear he'd have his hands full until that huge hook landed on the bell. If Conlan hadn't caught him cold, it would've been an even earlier night for him I think. Wood ended up trying to survive for the first couple.
Good fighter, but ultimately that early knockdown swung the fight in his favour. His only hope in a rematch would be an early knockout, because Wood will keep coming.
you can’t use if’s and but’s when a fighter scores an excellent knockdown with a disguised shot. Conlan’s ability and timing landed that shot, if It took Wood rounds to recover, that’s on him.
If they had a rematch and Conlan landed similar shot again, it would have a similar effect.
Wood was trying to parry every shot in the first round, Conlan read it and switched it up top. It was Wood’s defensive predictability that got him dropped and Conlan’s ability to read it.
That’s boxing, you can’t start saying a fight would be different and dismiss a fighters good work after the fact.Comment

after a frightening fall out of the ring in the 12th round,
Stop it! He was knocked TF out of the ring?!Comment

Not really. After the knock down I think the widest you could have it was 3 points (4 if you gave a 10-8 for the second, which I didn't).
Wood won a few rounds, had a knockdown. At the point of the knockout it was going to be close.
Calling this one ridiculous diminishes how ridiculous some cards are. This one wasn't ridiculous.
Having him way ahead suggests people weren't scoring it.Comment

I'm impressed by Wood. Winning a fight where you have less natural talent, less skill and technique than your opponent is a hard task. Doing it after an early beating even harder.
A rematch would be interesting. For Conlan though if he tries to preserve his stamina a bit more, he loses some of his aggression and doesn't win rounds as clear. Would need just the right gameplan.Comment

Tough break for Conlan.
On another note, I kinda forgot Conlan was with TR. I remember when it was Crawford, Loma, Stevenson & Conlan all being promoted as TRs big four. & for a while it seemed like Conlan and Shakur were being built up simultaneously but then Conlan kinda just slipped to the wayside.Comment

Hard to agree with that

So I'd be more than willing to bet he doesn't land that hail Mary again and instead gets knocked out earlier.
Of course if he was in full health. Get well soon Michael! Rematch isn't something he should really be thinking about.Comment
